making the commitment and keeping it to get fit

So the weather hasn’t been kind – but I am determined to keep up the work schedule. First of all, I found a GREAT on line article about conditioning for your first endurance ride. It is from the Southeast Endurance Riders Association. The link is below.…

Clinton Anderson’s Training Tip of the Week: Make sure your horse is paying attention.

I have a saying: Two eyes are always better than two heels. If I want to teach you something, I need you to give me your eyes and your attention. If you’re looking out the window and staring at the people walking on the sidewalk or the cars going by on the street,… Continue

Ride With Confidence: Part 6 - Practice Makes Perfect

It is a given that the more you practice a skill the more successful you will be.

My students always ask, "How much practice is enough?" They worry their horse will get bored or sour. My answer is that you can never practice enough. The more you practice the better you get which changes things for your horse (hopefully for the better). You can also be creative and practice your skills in different situations to keep life interesting for your…

Improving Haunches-In and Shoulder-In When Your Horse's Stiff Side is on the Inside

Lately, I seem to be getting a lot of questions about improving haunches-in and shoulder-in when the stiff side is on the inside.

So here are some ideas to help. I’ll start with haunches-in.

Let’s say your horse is stiff to the right. Start by tracking to the right and do the following:

1. Ride a 10m circle in the trot, and focus on…

Best of William Micklem - 11 - FEAR AND THE ‘MAGGOT IN THE MIND'

Never underestimate the power of the mind, not only as a power for good but also as a negative power that can subconsciously restrict your activities and achievements. Fear is often connected to a negative attitude. There are two…

Thursday

conditions;Unable to ride today due to delay leaving work.

I have been thinking about Caddymaster a lot and I wanted to put down in words the thoughts about why he is doing so well of late.

Caddymaster: So I've been the only human riding him since he was turning 4 years old (he is now 12). He has always been a laid back dude. The bit has always slid a little out of the left side of the mouth. Recently…

Because of Love

In the beginning of all things, wisdom and knowledge were with the animals; for Tirawa, the One Above, did not speak directly to man. He sent certain animals to tell men that he showed himself through the…

Your Seat And Your Saddle

Your Seat And Your Saddle

So many riders find it hard to keep their seat and pelvis in the correct position on their horse. Your own conformation and the conformation of your saddle plays a huge role in allowing your seat to be in the correct position.

Take a look at the conformation of your saddle. Make sure that your saddle allows you to find a neutral pelvic position. Even if your saddle fits your horse, it doesn’t mean it fits you. Just because your… Continue

Conditions: post-call day off :) Last night was very quiet on call, so whole night to sleep :). Snow mixed with rain, no hacking.

Ride With Confidence: Part 5 - Motivation Through Success

"The journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step." Lao Tzu

Sometimes the biggest step to success is the one we take through the arena door.

Right now I have a big personal goal - to ride my young, athletic, spooky horse out in the forest next summer in the annual charity ride.

Thinking about that goal is overwhelming. If I put that pressure on myself every time I walk to the arena I know I would easily…

My Ride with Jane Savoie

I had a birthday last weekend, and I got the most incredible gift. It was given to me by Sammie, but when I really think about it, the gift was made possible by Jane Savoie. (For those of you who have been living under a rock, Jane is one of the most well-known names in dressage, with a list of accomplishments too numerous to detail here.)

You already know that I have had my share of challenges with…

Insurance 101 with Mike King - Horse Insurance and Related Coverages

In previous postings, we have discussed some points related to insuring the horse itself… but what about other horse related insurance policies that are also considered somewhat specialized?

Several types of coverage pop into my mind and we will post information on the first here and now:

1. Farm insurance:

This may seem all too obvious, but after many years working in the business, insurance that is actually designed for property where horses are present is actually… Continue

Horses....understanding Partnership

So you are on your way to the barn. It's a beautiful day, and you have a perfect vision of what your ride will be like. You envision your horse standing at the gate waiting for your arrival, excited to leave his friends and hay, and to come inside and hang out with you.

When you get to the barn your horse has its hindquarters facing you, his head buried in the hay and all…

obesity

I had a pug that was over weight. He was 33pound and very had to get the weight off.I got it off once and got down to 27 pounds, but it didn't last long. Mind you when you have 3 dogs it was hard to keep them from eating the other guys food. He seemed to be happy though. We had to put him down just last month as he lost bowel and bladder function. The Vet said there was nothing that could be done as he had nerve damage and spine problems which she said was no cure for. Miss the big guy alot. We… Continue
