Getting mom back into riding

Hey guys my mom wants to get back into riding horses and she needs to regain confidence and balance so I was wondering if you knew of anyone who is selling a horse mare or gelding less then $200 in Oregon.

Thanks, Savannah.

Planning a Wedding? A Barn Might Be the Perfect Setting

Wedding season is upon us. Does the charm of a white wedding dress, cowboy boots, and a barn with open fields entrance you? If you want to get a little country with your wedding, a barn might be the perfect place to hold either it or the reception – or both.

Plan the Area Carefully

Helping Your Child Pack for a Summer Horse Camp

You’ve decided on the perfect summer riding camp for your child, and the camp has sent you a list of suggested items to pack. Great! Before you get to squeezing items into duffle bags, though, go over the list yourself. While some camps are wonderfully thorough in the packing lists they provide, others might miss some essential supplies that your young rider will…

Preparing for Your First Clinic

Are you going to ride in a clinic this year? Clinics are great chances to learn under skilled trainers and riders, but riding in your first clinic can be a bit intimidating. Planning ahead of time can ensure that you and your horse are ready to go on the day of the clinic.

Research the Clinician

May 22, 1896? The First Meeting Was Held To Create the Devon Horse Show

On May 22, 1896, the first meeting was held to create the Devon Horse Show. And the show's founders weren't fooling around – the first Devon Horse Show was held in Devon-Berwyn, Pennsylvania that July, just a short two months later.

The first Devon Horse Show was an entirely different event from what it has grown into today. The first show was one day long and offered only 28 classes. Today, it is the largest outdoor multi-breed horse show in the United States, an honor that it has…

Cracking the code, with my fabulous trainer's expertise, of course!

After my last session with my trainer, I felt a little disappointed with my jumping and my inability to bring Kingston's pace under control. I know not to give the guy something to lean against, but I honestly thought I provided enough release to prevent it from happening.

Yesterday, we rode outside and there are no walls to use as aids in slowing him down. We trotted over a low fence, then, we moved up to cantering over the fence, then halting. Not bad. Then my trainer decided…

I Give Eli a Helpful Hint

The heat has started to come to North Carolina, and due to thousands of dollars of unexpected expenses plus expected money not coming in I am having to adjust to living without air-conditioning this summer.  Just today we got an air-conditioner in one room, the room we fixed up after our water pipes froze last winter, the smallest room in our house.  So I am not doing as well as normal, but that has been the story of my life this year.

Since Debbie went off on vacation…

Do you Stall your Horse?

Does your horse live in a stall?

I know there is a lot of conversation about the benefit of using Horse Stalls or letting your horse enjoy open paddocks. That conversation can go many directions.

Our management decisions found our horses spending most of their time in small pastures and usually brought in during inclement weather or prior to "Show Time". Everyone does not enjoy our mild Northern California climate and may need to provide more shade in…

Training is Like a Box of Chocolates…

Say hello to Mr. Mustache. That’s what I call him. He was relinquished to Ruby Ranch Horse Rescue and my barn was his first stop. To say he didn’t get out much is an understatement. He’s six and this is his first time away from his mom. With very minimal handling in the past, he isn’t all that attached to people but at the same time, not really wild. He has a…

Should Your Child Bring Their Horse With Them to A Summer Horse Camp?

Congratulations – you’ve decided to send your child to a summer horse camp and have found the perfect one. Now you face a more difficult decision – should your child bring their own horse with them to summer camp? While bringing their own horse might sound like the ideal situation to a child, you need to weigh the advantages and disadvantages. Depending on the situation, bringing a horse to camp might not be the best decision for your child.…

I Must Be Insane to Start Jumping...at 48

So, after 5 years of riding as an adult, I decided that jumping would be a hoot. Two weeks ago, I turned that into a reality. It is a heck of a lot of fun, but boy...talk about fear factor!

The first jumping lesson was fairly smooth, mostly getting used to that sensation of the jump, trotting to the fence, cantering away, and then halt. The second lesson was building on that. Cantering to the jump, halting OR cantering away.

Last night, the third lesson should have built upon…

Things To Look for When Buying a Used Saddle

Buying a used saddle brings with it many advantages: you are sure to save money over the cost of buying a new saddle, and you will save yourself the often uncomfortable process of breaking in a new saddle. But when buying a used saddle, you need to be on the lookout for a variety of issues that could signify that the saddle is damaged. Here’s how to avoid them.…

The immense and impressive Suffolk Punch has a rich history – it is the oldest breed of heavy horse in Britain to exist today while still closely resembling its ancestors. But the Suffolk Punch is also rare, with fewer than 3,000 registered horses in existence.

The Oakley Diaries - 18: Lesson The First- Wow

I let my friend R.M. have her first real horse ride on Oakley. It was a thrill and a pleasure for us both. Firstly, because, for years, we've had an ongoing argument:

"I know how to ride."

"No, you don't."

"But I've been on lots of trail…

Two Ways I Triggered My Hip Bursitis This Week

After several sweaty rides it cooled down this week.  We had to go through 3 inches of rain first, but for my last two rides it was cool with a pleasant breeze, cool enough that Mia protested standing in the breeze since she is now in her summer coat.

It was on Mia that I triggered my hip bursitis the first time.  After a nice ride walking around with no problems I decided it might be a good idea for me to practice gripping with my calves (NOT my heels) so I would be…
