Paige Presents: This Week in Horse History - September 1st

Hello everyone, my name is Paige and I'd like to welcome you to my blog! I am currently a Senior in college and am studying English and Music Performance. I was recently certified as an equine massage therapist, and three months ago I bought my first horse, a Thoroughbred mare.

Now on to my blog. Each Monday I will be posting a blog highlighting three horse-related events that occurred during that week in history. This week's events feature the first Great Santa Fe Trail Horse Race… Continue

Some Small Signs of Progress

Another wonderful week, in that I got to ride 3 times. If my energy keeps up I could get to like this!

Although the heat has started to moderate down here in NC, it is still incredibly muggy. I am grateful that those horrible flies I call buzz-bombers (you know, the ones over 1" long) have yet to appear in great numbers.

Mia surprised me Friday. The jumps in the arena were being re-arranged, with various parts of jumps temporarily being stored just outside the…

Why I do what I do....

My Passion - Helping Horses Worldwide!

In 1984 after qualifying for the European Championships I had to retire my beautiful Hanoverian gelding for lameness, and my riding career came abruptly to an end. I wish I knew then what I have learned in the past 24+ years as a Certified Master Saddler consulting with equine professionals around the world. At very least I know Pirat would have been sound a lot longer, at best my riding career would have gone much farther.

At the…

Trouble in you canter transitions- Part 2- questions about physical issues.

Yesterday I posted a blog about rider and training issues concerning your horses canter departs. Today i will be addressing a second list of questions you should ask your self and your veterinarian to help rule out physical issues that could be preventing your horse from cantering comfortably. Many times the bad behavior of your horse is directly related to pain and discomfort.

This second list should prompt you to ask about physical and external issues. An examination or two from your… Continue

STOP PRESS - Even Mark Todd can be led astray

This afternoon Kevin Staut of France won the Individual Gold Medal in the European show jumping championships in Windsor, England, riding his 'Selle Francais' stallion Kraque Boom Bois Margot.

He is by Olisco (by the legendary jumping sire Jalisco B out of a mare who is over 60% Arab ) who jumped very successfully in the United States in the 1990's ridden by Michael Matz, and out of Joyau D'Or a 'Selle Francais' mare.

When you do the analysis on this stallion's breeding…

HARNESSING HORSEPOWER? - Don't "put the cart before the horse".

As we all know, the old expression “don’t put the cart before the horse” is a metaphor about making sure that we have our priorities straight. Having said that, what is literal is how tragic it can get when someone arbitrarily assumes that it would be fun to drive their horse in a cart or buggy and that the horse will just agree do his or her job and be okay with pulling the contraption down the road.

Unfortunately, what all too often happens when even the best riding horses are… Continue

Dealing With Horses On Stall Rest

Hi Julie,

I have just started to care for a 5 year old Irish Draught x TB - he has a tendon/tendon sheath injury and was about to be put to sleep by his previous owner, due to lack of time and money and the possibility that he may not be able to be ridden again. He has been stabled now for three months and apparently has not been behaving very well in his 12 foot x 12 foot stable (he is 17.2 hh).

I have moved him to a much larger stable in a quiet yard and he seems much…

How To Make Your Lazy Horse More Energetic

Are you sick and tired of doing all the work while your lazy horse plods along without energy? Remember that a horse can feel a fly on his side, so logically there’s no reason for him to be dull to your legs.

Here are the steps to put the lazy horse in front of your legs:

1. Give a light leg aid

2. No response, half-hearted response, or delayed response

3. Correct him by sending him forward

4. RETEST

5. 100% response (99.9% isn't good…

Equine Science: Weekly News and Trivia Question - August 28, 2009

This week’s blog takes a look at horse’s whinnies, overweight horses and overtraining, before testing how much you know about your equine’s heart.

But first, a happy story about a young foal who is able to walk again after pioneering treatment in Belgium. After a healthy birth, the filly Vittel suddenly lost movement in his hind legs and developed incontinence when he was three weeks old. She was found to have a cyst that was compressing her spinal cord and this was removed… Continue

EVEN MARK TODD CAN BE LED ASTRAY - PART 7

So is there one King of thoroughbred sires in the sport horse world? Many of you already have your personal favourite, which is wonderful because personal favourites reinforces an emotional connection with horses and this gives the horse world added strength….and it is the emotional connection between human and horse that ensures we avoid treating horses as machines.

HYPERION – SMALL BUT STUNNING

My own personal favourite is Hyperion.…

Horse moving day!

Today I ended up moving my horses to a local racing farm. They have an indoor arena, with lots of paddocks with pasture. 30 + stalls in the barn, and only about 10 horses in total they race there. So indoor arena is free range since there are no other boarder riders here. So laid back. I get to take care of my own horses now. I get to monitor everything and make sure they are well. My one grey TB gelding has lost some weight and he's only 4 so I have got to get some groceries into his system.… Continue

Cameo Z wins his first CSH Weanling class

What can I say? The little man is an amazing little guy. It seems everything we throw at him...first time in a stall, first time in turnout on his own, weaning, getting on and off a trailer the first time is just uneventful. He really is an amazing little guy. He takes everything calmly, never panics, never freaks out....he just takes it all in stride (a little horsey stride that is!!). In his first breeders show (mine too...as I've never done this line showing stuff before...I've only ever… Continue

How will the new EU requirements for horse meat imports affect our horse industry?

Below is a news release from yesterday. The new EU rules coming into effect in April 2010, require that either slaughtered horses have complete health records showing they have not received banned substances, or a 180 day (6 month) quarantine is required. The new rules will mean that horses coming from auctions and other souces will have to be kept drug free on a feedlot for at least half a year. How will this impact horse welfare and the horse community in general?

Here is the link… Continue

"Other" Breeds in Dressage

(Disclaimer: sorry for the photo sizes...I don't know how to edit them smaller! LOL)

I have ridden, trained, and/or owned many different breeds and types of horses. I have also ridden and/or competed in many different disciplines. I won't list them all, but suffice it to say that in everything, the underlying principles of riding have been the same.

I believe (and practice) the same principles of riding and training the horse, no… Continue

Eventing: On-Course Safety and Superstitions

What are some safety "musts"?

Obviously eventing is a dangerous pursuit and we must take every precaution to keep ourselves and our horses safe. One thing that I see often is rider’s riding in stirrups that are too small for them and this could be very dangerous if they had a fall as they could get dragged. My advice to riders who have a fear of this or have problems keeping the weight in their heels so their foot doesn't go all the way through their stirrup is to use "TOE…

Can't get your heels down when you ride?

I have been asked a lot recently about why riders have such a hard time keeping their heels down. A heel that is not "down" may not have anything to do with the heel its self, but rather the knee and the calf muscle.

Many times the heel is not down because the calf needs to be stretched. A soft calf allows for the heel to drop below the toe when the foot is resting on the stirrup bar. When the heel is "down" in a rider, it drops just below the stirrup bar. The more important thing,… Continue
