Where do I go from here?

The closer I get to the Academy going live the more I ask myself, where do I go from here...I've received some very good feedback from all I shared the drafts of the Programmes with and I'm both anxious and excited at the thought of bringing it all to life and spreading the word. It will take a long time to make it into what I see in my head it could be but I… Continue

Yes Virginia there is a Santa Claus...

Out of season, but true nonetheless! At last, success in the ring! Okay, it was a schooling show, but I had an obedient (mostly), forward (pretty much) and NON BUCKING horse. Problems are so much easier to solve when it's the one with the opposable thumbs that is the problem and not the prey animal. Now, she's still waiting for the eye-popping squeeze fest, but, she'll very kindly give me the transition to canter, albeit a bit sprawling, with no histrionics. Thank goodness for the kindness of a… Continue

The rider IS the problem...

Well, I think we have found the answer to the squealing and bucking in the show ring... as it was described by my trainer... you're squeezing her eyeballs out! I hate it when I find out that it's me causing the problems. I have a very patient horse, thank goodness, who manages to forgive my foibles, as I forgive her when she's a boob occassionally. And a good trainer who is guiding us back to fill the holes in our training so we can progress. Today she said that the hardest step is getting…

City Boy goes to the Country

Last weekend, our May long weekend here in Canada, some friends and I drove 6 hours up into the interior of BC. We rented a cabin for 6 and we took 3 horses. It was a place called The Hills in 108th Mile House. The altitude is 12,000 feet, the air is clear and the trees are not as big and lush as our famous "wet coast". I loved the serenity, no people, traffic noise or cell phone towers! I took my new horse Bandit, who has spent years on the Hunter/Jumper circuit, and he has never done much…

A Quick Update

Well, I don't know what it was, but it appears to be gone. Jessie seems almost back to 100% as measured by how much she kicks up at feeding time. She doesn't kick up excessively but I can entice her to kick up if I make a few playful moves or if she is just feeling "perky".

The swelling in her pasterns is down. I'm still a little concerned with the crack in that hoof. I'll keep an eye on it. The farrier is do out week after next.

It's what I call a fugitive occurrence or,… Continue

Trouble in Paradise?

So far I've had Jessie for three + years and thankfully no health issues. We were scheduled to leave town for a family wedding 250 miles away last Friday. Thursday night I came home and was busy getting ready for the trip. About dusk I went out to see Jessie and noticed she seemed a bit lethargic. I went in and rubbed her and she felt warm so I took her temperature...103.4. She was eating her dinner, her stools were normal, her rear pasterns were a bit swollen but held no more heat than the… Continue

Horses have us figured out!

After 55 million years of evolution, you gotta believe they have us figured out. So much so, that I believe there's a book of tricks hidden somewhere. They all have it. They all know the tricks. You know what I mean. Leave the reins in the wrong place - they get chewed on. Trying to take a picture - your "stone still" horse appears to be standing on an ant hill. Late for a trail ride - your horse decides the trailer is "just not for me right now". There… Continue

Five Days Straight

I'm not a morning person, but I will get up if there is an opportunity to ride Jessie. We rode Thursday and Friday mornings before work and got two two-hour rides in on the weekend, then another hour ride Monday morning. I don't know about her, but I'm a little sore.

The Sunday ride was out to the city farm area. There are a lot of natural obstacles like this ditch to cross.…

Oli Lawrence and Lacken Chebel @ Hambleden CIC*

So we’ve done it. We’ve got a meaningful result at a decent level. Dell finished 9th in the CIC* at Hambleden. But

blimey it was a bit of an epic weekend.....

For starters I was missing school on Friday (again) but an early start meant we had plenty of time for Gray and Dell’s dressage.yes""> I’ve often been told that a problem with the junior system

is that you don’t get the experience of competing against…

Moving on up!....

So this last month has seen some solid progress. Troublesome horses have decided it’s more fun if they play ball and others have decided to let us know that they’re well and truly back on form – let me at it!

A last minute substitution saw Gray head off to Nurstead Court for his first Pre-Novice (PN) of the season. He

did a fabulous…

Berit, Hans Arne And Their Two Stallions.

I've know Berit since I was 14. We have always shared an interest for horses and we both lost the true love of our lives. Hers' was a big black gelding called Hector. She swore she would never get another horse ever again, but a few years passed by, and one day she called me up and said, "I just became a horse owner again". She told me that the horse she had bough was a new born stallion. A native…

A Conversation with Jessie

I was up at six and had the horses moved and Jessie saddled by six-thirty. Armed with with my index card of exercises, fresh from re-watching the DVD's for the ??th time, we were ready to go.

The first exercise, Yield-to-Stop at walk, trot, and cantor, went pretty well. Jessie stops easily and isn't crazy about yielding or flexing, but I could feel her trying and getting softer in the process. The next exercise is the same except I add a bending circle around my inside leg and her head… Continue

We try to take the trailer out at least once a month. Family obligations are taking up many of the May weekends so we decided to take another river ride on Saturday. It was a beautiful day and we planned to ride out to a little bar about 4 miles away, have a beer and a snack, then head back.

I always feel like I should be doing…

BEN/RAINBOW/RANDY/HANA

Shortly after I was married I got my first Yellow Lab, Gentle Ben. For the next 13-plus years Ben worked on our farm with me. He had an uncanny ability to tell sick horses from healthy ones. Ben helped with every foaling. As soon as I’d let him, Ben would be in the stall cleaning the foal. Every mare allowed him access, which was astonishing.…

When the bad things happen...

...it erases the memory of the good.

It had to happen. It happens to everyone, I just did not know it would happen today. The day started out so good. The sun was shining, the birds were singing and spring was in the air. The horses graze 24/7 in a huge pasture that reaches over 90.000 square meters.. As I walked through the forest to find the horses I had such a good feeling about this day.

(The pony…

Of Riding and Training

The sun is rising earlier. The sun is setting latter. The opportunities to ride are more plentiful. Anyone who has followed this blog or it's shadow on blogger (Training Jessie) knows that I'm trying to work through all the exercises in the two Downunder Horsemanship's Gaining Respect on the Ground and Riding with Confidence… Continue

2010 Del Mar National

2010 Del Mar National

We had quite the exciting week at the 2010 Del Mar National April 27th through May 2cnd. The week before the show my trainer Teri and I decided that we should try to get her horse Wynsum in the show so I could take him in the Junior classes. He's for sale and she wants to market him as a Junior/Young Rider horse so she's having me campaign him and try to…

First Show of the 2010 Season

Our first show of the season is out of the way.

Chellis and I attended an Open Arab Show in Campbellville. While my mare is not an Arab, I took this opportunity to practice our tests in front of a judge before attending our first Silver Show.

This was a small milestone for myself (no pun intended) as I have finally broken free from training level. We finished the day with 2 red ribbons Scoring 62% in First Level Test 1 and improving slightly with a score of 62.22% for our… Continue

The search for Turbo

Sunday evening, I was feeling sorry for myself. I had just had to face financial reality and cancel my plans to attend a dressage clinic with Manolo Mendez. Just moments after I send the withdrawal email, I had a message in my in box from a friend with the heading - Lost Turbo. Turbo is a sweet little black gelding she bought a couple years ago to use as a pack horse. I helped her with training him, as he was incredibly sour. Misfitted saddles and bad riders had pretty much convinced him that… Continue
