As it turns out, Pickles is no ordinary horse. With a little research, we learned that her grandfather sired Kentucky Derby winner Foolish Pleasure.
So our starved, neglected horse has the blood of a champion in her veins. Maybe that's why she has this quiet sort of class about her.
Every day when we watch and work on her, she finds a way to tell us something new about herself and what she's been through.
Today we finished shaving the hair off most of her rain…

When I went out this morning, Pickles made that encouraging hungry horsey sound and seemed happier than she did yesterday.
There is a look that horses get in their eyes that tells you what they’re thinking. Sometimes it's easier to read than others. But Pickles is an honest horse and I think she knows she's safe now.
We trimmed her mane last night and put some moisturizer on her feet. She is still walking a little sticky this morning and I'm debating whether or not I want to…

Horse Rescue: She gave all she had to people who abused her.
Sometimes you do things that just don't make sense. This is one of them.
We got another horse today. Not just any horse - a starved, abused ex-racehorse.
She is in horrible shape; She's got rain rot all over her skin, her ribs are sticking out, and her feet are pretty messed up.
We've done this before and had great success, but that doesn't make it any less crazy - or any less expensive. But we are also…

In 50 years, Lori from Sunkissed Acres has never seen a more thin horse. Three shoes, not terribly old. Feet trimmed certainly within the last few months. Eye removal, professionally done. Wearing a rope halter, still clean. This horse had clearly been abandoned in the bush. The vet and Lori decided that this poor, young horse was hemmed up in someone's pen or field, probably a small pasture with no water or grass - even more devastating considering the recent bitter cold in that part of…

Sunday afternoon Gail from TIER noticed Radar was uncomfortable. He would eat a mouthful of hay, walk off, stand for a minute and then start walking his enclosure. She took his temperature, which was normal,…

According to the department of agriculture, this horse simply walked out of the bush onto the highway, and they asked asked Sunkissed to take him on. The vet aged this horse between
four and five years of age. He has three shoes - possibly from last year. An old injury, but not lame. He is missing an eye.
He is the skinniest horse Sunkissed has had to date. They are…

Sadly, one of Uncle Jimmy’s horses was grinched in the Chronicle of the Horse Forums Horse Treat Secret Santa. We volunteered to be a degrincher, and was assigned Uncle Jimmy. But what Uncle Jimmy had planned to do – since, after all, his horses are hardly lacking for treats! – was donate whatever was sent to him to a less fortunate horse – one at an equine rescue. And, knowing that the needs of rescue horses may be unique, he offered instead to donate a very generous check to one of the…

Operation: Noah’s Ark
His real name is Montenapoleone – named after the most expensive and elegant district of Milan, Italy - the most important street in fashion. When we met, he was called Pepper. A 15.2 hand grey Thoroughbred gelding, he was born on the Haras Santa Maria de Araras in Ocala, FL. His pedigree is one of greatness – his dam by Alydar, and great grand-sire, Seattle Slew. He won almost $200,000 in 4 years of racing –ending up in New England. Skinny under a winter…

Hurrah, hurrah, he's doing well. The temperature/pneumonia worry is always there, but touch wood, he's fine at the moment. Still being fed by nasal-gastric tube, every two hours, day and night, but he's getting stronger every day.
They hope that soon he will develop a proper sucking reflex, but of course nobody knows just how premature he might be. Sucking is much better for the digestion than a stomach tube - all the wee scrap's 'systems' will work better.
But he is…
