Moments with Mara B

Most days I visit Mara at the stable, we have become zen together. We always vary our daily activities, between ground work, trails and road riding, grooming and walks around the stable. Consistent contact is so powerful. I'm grateful for Mara each day.

Mara Moments Horse Time

My special mare Mara B and I practice our own unique form of equine therapy. Mara has been a strong healing presence for me since the death of our youngest son Benjamin. We trail ride, enjoy our barn friends, the barn critters plus grooming and horse care then post a daily update on MaraMomentshorsetime blog. Please ride along and meet our delightful stable pals, the paddock horses Mara is with, enjoy watching the changing seasons, weather and crop conditions, the simple beauty of nature we… Continue

Thinking About A New Year’s Resolution? Five Reasons To Try Equine Therapy

We all make resolutions, and sadly, many of us will never realize these often lofty goals. And what do we do then? We wonder why. First, why did we make the resolution in the first place, and if we are the introspective type, what is it about us that prevented us from reaching our target. But to answer these questions, we’d probably have to have a window into our unconscious. And really, we may just not have the time or patience for psychoanalysis.…

Equine Center Contribution

I am always on the lookout for materials to use to build up the equine center.  Most recently I got permission to relocate a 20x80 pipe coral.  I got started this past weekend by removing the 4 cable runs.  Not exactly and easy task but the weather was nice and all went very well.

Therapy Animals -Every One.

I was being half-mauled by a terrier. I was running an errand in an urban office and the dog’s owner was horrified. She apologized, explaining that her dog never did that.

In the dogs’ defense, I have a very special stink to my feet. I carry with me a cornucopia of delightful smells from several species in my barn. I smell like an exception to the…

The Silver Lining in an Equine Dream

I think my story is similar to many first time horse owners over 40. I’ve loved horses since I was 8, but didn’t have an opportunity to own one; so at 50+ years and with some time, money and determination to bring an old dream to life, I bought a horse. The story and dream grew to include 2 horses. I was so excited, but naïve about what it takes to look after and develop a…

Women Riding the Forward Seat

My wonderful son asked me last week what I wanted for Christmas, muttering that it was probably too late to order on-line to get something by Christmas.  I went to the wonderful book site (amazon) and found that I could get any amount of horsie books by Christmas, and I asked for "Riding and Schooling Horses" by Harry D. Chamberlin, the Captain of the US Cavalry teams for international competition so long ago.  This book,…

Starting and running a 501(c)3, or how to use up all your free time

I am President of Special Horses, Inc., a 501(c)3 charitable organization dedicated to helping smaller equine 501(c)3s with exposure and fundraising. While we in no way can cover all the PR and fundraising for any group, we try to help.

It started from my "Dribble Theory." Someone on the Chronicle of the Horse Forum would post about a horse in need, and I'd send in a small amount - not very much, maybe $5 or $10. But I would think, what if 50 people did that? 100? $5 is a dribble...but… Continue

Meet Paco!

Paco is the first horse all participants meet when they first start our program because of his wonderful personality. He is a Quarter Horse, Dun in color (some call him Buckskin) and 15hh. He is 20 years old. He has done it all in his life from cows to barrels and everything in between. While he will accommodate our riders who prefer English equitation, he is a cowboy horse through and through. He is a dream in the saddle who neck reins better… Continue
