Two Man Sorting
Last Sunday, after a good ride on Saturday morning, we took the horses out for some two-man sorting at Rancho Rio Stables by the Kern River. In this iteration of calf work, the cattle are numbered zero to nine and there are two pens about 40 feet across with an opening between the two. The cows are settled into the far end of one pen. Our job is to go in and, once we cross into the occupied pen we are given a number, then we start with that cow and…

I didn't get out to see Cooper again all last week, Al did go out on his own though. When I came in to the barn Cooper was pushing his nose in the corner of the door to get out. As I groomed him he had this soft look in his eyes and was turning his head and mouthing me, not biting, just rubbing me with his lips. I wasn't feeling up to riding so I decided to take him into the arena and free lunge him as no one else was around. He was relaxed and not doing any crazy…

Last month we talked about the
questions that I ask every owner of a new horse coming into my barn.
Young or old, trained or untrained, it's essential to know as much about a new horse as possible.

My sister and I took Tuesday off to ride, and what a pretty day it was. The temps were warm and it was sunny. First, we took Cruise and Ranger out on a 1.5 hour ride with a lot of walking so we could talk and just enjoy the day.
When I got back, I took Cole out on the same ride, but as always, when I take Cole out, it is a training ride. He actually was a little balky at the beginning of the ride, and I had to tap him with the whip to explain that stopping wasn’t an option. He…

Emily Winegar is definitely another young rider with a career on fire. At just 15, she has already been crowned AQHYA World Champion in 2009 in addition to two previous reserve champion titles. Her other victories include winning the KRHA Sunflower Slide Futurity Open in 2005, an Open finalist at the NRHA Futurity, named the National Reining Horse Association’s Youth of the Year in 2008 and Palomino Horse Breeders Association Youth World Champion for the last four years. She was also…

Horse Have to be Kept Apart of Trail Rides
On any hack, everyone is careful to keep their horses apart. Mostly out of fear in case one spooks and kicks another or in case personalities don’t mix. Surprisingly horses prefer to be tail to nose on hacks. This gives them a sense of security and reassurance out in the big scary forests. It also has to do with their herd instincts and need for closeness.
Miniature Ponies are Ponies
A few people have…

I think my story is similar to many first time horse owners over 40. I’ve loved horses since I was 8, but didn’t have an opportunity to own one; so at 50+ years and with some time, money and determination to bring an old dream to life, I bought a horse. The story and dream grew to include 2 horses. I was so excited, but naïve about what it takes to look after and develop a…

So I'm pretty new to blogging, but I decided that I had a super day today and it would be fun to at least document some of it. Today was Treasure's third show of the year (second show away from home) and he was absolutely brilliant!! I think today was the first time he went to a show and didn't spook at anything - a milestone for sure! He was a bit quick for the judge's liking in our Western…

Today was a beautiful day. I tried to work all my horses but only got a few done. Its all good though.
I did ground work with Fergie, (Painted Beauty), (my newest baby a 3 yo paint. The filly from my late paint mare, B (My Bayou Beauty). I got her completely green. So I am starting from scratch.)
I lunged Fergie in the arena with a western…

Hi Julie,
Try to settle this discussion - please! Is posting on the correct "diagonal" only important in English riding? I always thought it was about the horse's balance in a bend....some say it's just not a "western thing"...and will post in a western saddle, but not with any regard for the diagonal???
Sharon
Sharon,
You are correct that posting…

So you've tried dressage, maybe even attended your first dressage show, and now you're hooked. It’s one of the fastest growing events in equestrian sports, so you are not alone. When it comes to making the switch to dressage, not all horses are created equal. Some are better suited conformationally and in…
