W.D.T.H. "Western Dressage Training Hierarchy"

The best riders and trainers in the world will tell you that good training is that which is built block by block onto a strong, solid base. That base is comprised of the following six elements in that particular order:

1) Impulsion/Forward

2) Contact/Acceptance

3) Collection/Self-Carriage

4) Straightness/Balance…

The "ahaa" moment for me and Jack

So I've been working with this Quarter Horse gelding that came into the Western Riding school where I work a couple of months ago. He's a nice horse just hasn't had any real training. So for the last sixty days we have been working a lot on flexion, bend, moving forward, moving off my leg, just getting him more broke in the face etc.

So I just had to share this because… Continue

William Shatner to show his reining skills for Make-A-Wish Foundation

William Shatner to show his reining skills

November 12, 2009

Actor William Shatner has had his share of adventures as Star Trek's Captain James T. Kirk and Boston Legal's Denny Crane. Now he's climbing aboard a reining horse to put it through its paces, and help raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Oklahoma.

It shouldn't pose too great a challenge to the well known Hollywood actor and philanthropist.

Shatner is a longtime, dedicated breeder… Continue

Is Posting in Western Different than English? What about Diagonals?

Question: I am just learning to ride western. I have been riding english for 5 years. Will I need to learn how to post all over again? Is there a difference? I don’t want to look stupid. And how do I get diagonals?

Answer from April Reeves, Horseman's U.com: Posting the trot in Western is the same as English. Remember, horses cannot distinguish the difference in disciplines, only humans do. The movements of a single horse are the same regardless of a Western or English… Continue

Basic Groundwork and Saddle work for the Herd Bound Horse

By April Reeves, Horseman's U.com: I get this question all the time so I thought I would address it here. Herd bound horses can become dangerous if the problem is not nipped in the bud right away. However, it’s one of those problems that many people are unable to deal with as it takes a certain level of skill.

This article is for those who are baffled and need a solution that they can accomplish. It is the longest one I have written to date, and covers some very extensive… Continue

Lessons From Sam by Robert Pruitt

He had been sold a few times before. An old Quarter Horse named Sam. He was respectful but knew who he was and wasn't impressed with anyone, anymore. I could put a halter on him; tie the lead rope in a circle and any small child could control him like he had the best custom bridle and reins. Sam would never take one false step with a child on his back, or a quick step or any step that might frighten a child. Twenty years old, Sam was a big stocky and still powerful old style… Continue

My Top 17 Favorite Sites to Buy Western Show Clothes

We all have our vices. Some women collect purses. Some collect shoes. I have a closet full of western show outfits in various colors. For some reason, I have a weakness for them. Maybe because of the Swarovski crystals, the multi-hued material, or because they are related to horses. Either way, I love to spend my money on show clothes. Since there are no local shops that I can buy show clothes from (see About Me), I have bookmarked online websites that I like (and can afford) that sell western… Continue

Trying to Fit a Square Peg into a Round Hole (Or trying to make your horse do something it hates)

Do you know that saying “It is like trying to fit a square peg in to a round hole?” Well sometimes we horse owners do that to our horses. We try to force our horse to do something that it doesn’t like to do. Let me give you an example.

I have been showing Valerie for about two years now in Class A Arab horse shows. All the classes I enter in are strictly western–western pleasure, trail, and… Continue

Advice?

I just joined this lovely site but can't figure out where else to post!!!

I am currently doing a free lease on an Appy sport horse. Her confirmation is GREAT and she has a great free jump form. She is 4 years old.

She has most of her professional training in western pleasure, which she does not enjoy. This is why she is now in my possession.

She is having a hard time with the communication differences from WP to H/J. My first big problem was getting her to…
