So I'm curious...what do you think is more important about a trainer? Affordability? Win Record? What's more important to you?

Me too! I wish I know more about feet and shoeing. I should probably take a class to get a little more working knowlege. It's one of the biggest areas that I lack in.
Used to watch a trainer's farrier at work-the farrier was all about the details. He'd even have the trainer ride the horses around with the new shoes on and adjust them if necessary. Facinating. It's amazing how the smallest detail can mean so much. Your husband sounds like a very talented trainer, being able to tackle such a broad range of disciplines. It would be cool to be inside his head and hear what he's finding out from all the trainers he watches!
Hey Heidi....it's very interesting to say the least...watching him watch other trainers....finding out what he learned from that....what he didn't learn, what he liked and didn't like.

From watching him, I've learned that all of his experience in these different disciplines has allowed him to help a wide variety of horses and owners.....He constantly amazes me when he's helping someone...he will watch them ride, he'll then ride their horse, then he will make some changes, make some suggestions and next thing you know, it looks like you are watching a different horse and rider. I love it. I feel very fortunate.
I have had trainers on two sides of the fence. Some that were very driven and pushed me in every lesson, and those that have been patient and allowed me to learn at my own pace. Both had their merits that is for sure. For me the best situation is finding a perfect blend of both types. A trainer that pushes yo to learn and achieve more all while being considerate of the way you learn or issues you may need to overcome as an individual. No matter what type of trainer I have always worked to learn something from all of them.
Good point. Gives me something to ponder. Thanks!
Safety and value of what is taught. Are you learning to ride correctly? are you enjoying yourself - are you and your horse improving?
If I see good progress with my horse, I'm happy. I need someone w a lot of show experience as thats what I'm into.
Compassion for what the rider and horse are going through in the learning process.
Love it...beautiful sentiment!
Adherence to classical technique and the ability to communicate correction one at a time. a trainer that tries to fix the whole picture gets nowhere, but the trainer that focuses on one aspect to improve at a time will get their student somewhere fast!
Changes with time... my trainer works on whatever we need to do next.... he knows how to so many different things. :) The most important thing? hmmmmmm....... that is a loaded question. For 4 years he's trained me and my horse... I know what I don't like but why turn a positive into a negative.
What do you guys think about this? Let's say you have a trainer, like I do..... but you don't know how to train your horse like he does? What if let's say you think your horse would like clicker training.... if you try something else with your horse when you are with him, does that mean that you would be undoing or wrecking what your trainer has done? I feel like Oliver is like half with me and half with him and we can both teach him different things..... I just don't have it in me to train like my trainer does..... but I do like to spend time with my horse and play games with him.... my trainer is kind of like going to school and really works Oliver and I'd like to have a more playful relationship with him...
