I've had both hips replaced and a knee.  The knee was done in January and I'm still waiting for it to feel normal.  I was riding again by the end of February.  I evented at age 75 (now 77) but my event horse, Rocky, is 20 and has Cushings.  He hasn't the stamina to do cross country anymore.  It was showing up at our last event 2 years ago but we finished with no time or jump penalties on X_C.  He ran out of steam on stadium and had a rail down, just putting us out of the ribbons.

It is always nice to know that "old" people are still riding.

Jeanne Kerstiens= I am sorry you had both knees done, But I am glad they are healed and feel better. I am so, so very sorry about your 32 yr old horse and te twist. I pray all the time Dolly never does that. I still have the very sore ribs,, and Dolly is all better. I have been over to see her, and she is ready to ride. I think I should give myself another week or so,,,, But I am glad its so hot,, so I cannot ride,, Im bad I know.. But After this week,, the 100 degree and 105 to 115 heat index will hopefully of come down.... Hang in there girls.. Each day you can, ride is a gift from heaven.....

  Hi,

I always have loved horses, Rode at 5 at my uncles farm summers. Had my own Horse farm in Upstate NY in the early 80's. Trained, foaled, showed, gamed, rode every day, and worked out too.

Moved to SC 6 years ago. Ran across this quarter horse paint, She is older. 20. She and I bonded right away. I know her every move, She knows mine. Its my dream come true to ride again. Never thought that would happen,, If I die on my horse-I will go on what Ive loved all my life!!

I had both knees replaced at the same time last summer.  I was out of commission for a while but I can ride again - no jumping(which I'd pretty much given up anyway!). My knees feel great and no pain!  The winter has been tough here but thanks to my Yak Trax, I've been pretty sure footed.  I haven't been on here in a long time but hope to be more active .  Joe, I'm sorry about your illness and your horses.  I'm glad you can visit them.  They are such a big part of our hearts.  When I signed up on this site, I had 5  horses.  Sadly, a little over a year  ago, I lost my wonderful 32 year old TB.  He colicked and the vet thinks it was most likely a lipoma.  He was grazing at 9:30 in the morning and at 10:15 he went down.  The vet came, he had a twist which the vet was able to flip partially.  By 11:30 we had put him down.  I still miss him; I had him for 22 years - we did everything together.  My other 4 are doing well.  The appy had a 7th cranial nerve issue last year which I will discuss another time.  She is doing well and has come back beautifully.  I'm looking forward to Spring!

My biggest issue is painful, arthritic knees. I've tried NEM and it seems to work. I also use the Back on Tack knee brace. I really don't want knee replacements and I am hoping for a medical breakthrough so I can still ride. this is nothing to Joes's challenge. I send you positive thoughts and prayers Joe.

Hi Everyone,

It has been a difficult winter for me, EXCEPT for my body.  The water froze repeatedly, the sewage system froze, iciness, etc., etc., but I kept riding when the weather cooperated and not riding did not make my mobility worse.

I am sorry Joe that you had to move your horses on.  I have been horseless for many years now.  I miss them, but when it is 5 F in the morning and ice is on the ground, I am SO GRATEFUL I do not have to feed and water the horses.  But on the other hand I miss those wonderful mornings for all the other seasons of the year.  I hope your doctors get effective soon.  Minis are a great idea, I think that the horses give off some type of pherome that reduces pain in humans.

Cindy, you are riding again, YEAH!  Enjoy your rides.

Hi everyone! Been a long time since I was on was dealing with ody pain which slowed my riding down. Was diagnosed with osteo arthritus in my hip, lower back, thumbs, and neck. Had hip replacement surgery July last year and am riding again. It's been many years since I rode in the snow.....what a joy. Currently setting goals for 2015 one major one is to ride into the wilderness back country in September. My 4 horses have been laid off while I was recovering so there's going to be plenty of cardio and strength training through the summer. Joe sorry to hear of your issues with cancer hope the docs can find a better way.

Yes, spring is coming.  Mia is shedding everywhere, she went into spring heat, and I am going to have to get more fly spray soon.
