different roads, different systems, the only thing  important is that balance for the horse should always be the priority.

I start my youngsters on the  trails- they spend one yr doing  work in walk and trot and canter, learn to shift and move up and down and off my leg and have fun. Lets face it- 12000 circles suck.

For me, E. Allan, it does not.  My students and I train in the classical system, and show in the USDF/USEF/FEI competitions, as well as local, unrated shows.  To add another entire competition division would be too much. But maybe some others would....

Hello, ladies:

I'm with you, Mary, Liz and Vickie.  I've had similar experiences, Liz.  Personally, I think one of the most wonderful things about classical dressage is that those who've gone before us have worked out the "bugs", so that what we now have is a system which can be counted on to work, and humanely, at that.  I don't see a need to re-invent the wheel....

Thank God I'm not alone on this NH method. Someone is going to be killed with the airy fairy method of training horses. I have in the past year had to reschool young horses, that have had their heads screwed up by their green owners, because they believe in every word that comes from the NH good doers! The main well know horsemen using the old cowboy ways are hard men, and if they have a horse that is not right between the ears, they'll soon decide whether the animal is worth training on! Most of the classical methods have been adopted by cavalry groups all over the world, from the natural tribal horsemen from the prairies of North America to Mongolia!

As a follower of classical dressage methods from the French and Portuguese influence I agree with Mary McGuire Smith on the commercialization of the "natural training" methods.  Good communication results in good training and it must be a two way street regardless of the methodology used.  Teach and then ask is one of the rules I train by, but much more goes into evolving a training method.   The best starting place is the old masters, followed by the current thinking backed up by science and then the evolution of your own method.  There are no quick fixes or magic aids.  It is all hard work that needs to be consistent, kind and rewarding for both horse and rider.

There are many differing opinions when it comes to our beloved horses. My philosophy and methodology follows what is considered the "classical" dressage (which means training) method. I read books and study with masters from the European school of thought--a combination of the German methods and those from the Spanish Riding School, with a few other influences as well.
In my opinion, NH is more of a commercialization than a method of training horses or people. It is attractive to the beginner because it promises big results fast. The problem is that it is not a complete set of principles; it it a arise of cues to elicit specific respnoses from a horse--that is why those clincians get big reactions at those public symposiums...but those results don't last. I am sure I will get flamed for this but it is my considered opinion, and I stand by it.
