Well, I don't know what it was, but it appears to be gone. Jessie seems almost back to 100% as measured by how much she kicks up at feeding time. She doesn't kick up excessively but I can entice her to kick up if I make a few playful moves or if she is just feeling "perky".
The swelling in her pasterns is down. I'm still a little concerned with the crack in that hoof. I'll keep an eye on it. The farrier is do out week after next.
It's what I call a fugitive occurrence or,…

Today I spent a few hours with a real dentist. Wow! Actually, I was in the easy seat while my wife sat in the hot seat. My wife is the sweetest gal in the world …… until she goes to the dentist.
We had been assured that this guy was good with patients like my wife. And I must admit, he was great! While he examined her, I watched and learned.
As you know, I still live in the dark ages as far as equine dentistry goes. The new dentists drug every horse, jack the mouth open with…

So far I've had Jessie for three + years and thankfully no health issues. We were scheduled to leave town for a family wedding 250 miles away last Friday. Thursday night I came home and was busy getting ready for the trip. About dusk I went out to see Jessie and noticed she seemed a bit lethargic. I went in and rubbed her and she felt warm so I took her temperature...103.4. She was eating her dinner, her stools were normal, her rear pasterns were a bit swollen but held no more heat than the…

The next stop on the European Tour is CDI4* Lingen, Germany, June 4 - 6. Looking forward to bringing you the results. This CDI is the same weekend as the CDI3* Palgrave, where those riders not in Europe will be competing for their WEG qualification scores. Looks like I'll be busy posting!

The first stop on the Spring European tour is underway. At the CDI3* Wiesbaden, Germany, Belinda Trussell and Anton earned 67.660% for eighth place in the GP on Sunday, May 23. Trussell had the unfortunate luck of drawing first to go, and Robert Dover commented on his blog that he felt the test was worthy of a 70%, and many people remarked the same to him. Bonny Bonnello and Pikardi earned 66.383% for 12th place, Shannon Dueck & her mare Ayscha earned 66.213% for 13th. Wendy Christoff and…

An absolutely wonderful thing happened on Wednesday when I rode Mia.
After our usual warm-up of two speeds of the walk and threading our way between and around the jumps I prepared for a trot, shortening the reins, getting my heels down, and then I politely asked Mia to trot. To my utter amazement, Mia trotted off the first time I asked her to! After 18 months of urge, urge, urge before she would shuffle off in a slow trot, she…

While your pets have come into your lives to learn from you, they’ve also come to teach. After communicating with hundreds of animals over the years, I’m still amazed at how often we miss their teachings.
Lessons range from showing us how to play again to teaching us about illness within ourselves from storing unresolved, negative emotions. The roles our pets play in our lives is directly proportional to our needs.
These selfless teachers appear when the student is ready.…

Dear Julie,
I am currently schooling and riding in a D-ring snaffle bit. I want to start training for Western Pleasure. What kind of shank bit do you recommend for the transition?
Thanks,
Kim
Kim,
In most rule books, horses six years old and up are required to show Western in a curb bit. Horses five and under can be ridden two-handed in a snaffle. As the horse advances in his training and you are doing more advanced stuff, your horse will probably work…
