The better your horse behaves for your farrier, the better job your farrier can do.
Let's face it. No one wants to have to pick out a hoof with a horse that is behaving badly. Neither does your farrier. It's hard enough to keep your own feet out of the way and not get stepped on on a good day, let alone trying to wrestle around…

I am so glad that Barbara got in touch with Special Horses, Inc. I have an account here but I thought it would be better to open a new one for the program rather than have a personal page.
I love what I see and will set up Special Horses, Inc too asap! I can't wait to meet the Barn mice community :)

This pony that I read won't stop rushing when she's behind, and won't stop pausing and pooping whenever she has to trot on or is in front. I've tried giving her taps behind and infront of the leg beforehand but it doesn't work, as well as putting on a firmer leg. Any advice anybody?????? I don't want to keep stopping others in my lesson by this stubborn pony! :) Please comment and give advice!

I have been giving a bunch of seat and leg position riding lessons lately, and we've discovered some interesting things about the correlation of the pelvis, lower leg, and losing your stirrups.
Does this ever happen to you?
Do you lose your stirrups in the sitting trot?
Does your horse slow down in the sitting trot or when you work without stirrups?
Does your knee come out over the front of the saddle when you’re in the sitting trot or canter?
Does…

I remember the occasion well. It was the Fourburrow Pony Club camp in Cornwall, in the south west of England. I was 12 and a typical thin gangly kid. As you can see in the photograph above I was six foot tall on stick legs and all curled up on a 14.2 pony....my brilliant mare Charlie's Aunt. So what did my coach do? She took away my irons and made me ride and jump all morning with no stirrup irons, just like so many coaches have done before…

There are different terms tossed around today in relation to gut health. Terms such as prebiotics, probiotics, and direct-fed-microbials are all used and sometimes cause confusion for horse people. The technical definitions are below.
Prebiotic – products that can't be digested by the animal but does promote the growth…

I don't know why, but school just drags on and on! I'm so tired, and all I want to do is get down to the Stables to be around the horses. But nooooo. I have to sit on my laptop doing Enlgish. Who really cares if a character is 2D or 3D? Not me.
Only 20 hours until I can go see the ponies again. I know I sound desperate, but seriously, more than 2 weeks without horses, and I cannot stop talking about them!
If you're looking for riding advice, don't come to me. I'm not great, but I do…

Agencies are asking for donations to purchase supplies for relief efforts in Haiti after Tuesday's earthquake.

* Agencies have set up phone lines, Web pages and texting for donations
* Donations will go toward medical and basic supplies, depending on agency

The rider, to ride well must be supple; the body must be filled with shock absorbers at every joint to allow the movement of the horse to go through the legs and up the rider's spine without getting stopped anywhere. For the dressage or
western rider the ankles, hips and shoulders must be relaxed, moveable, and independent of the movement of the torso.
This…

In December 2009, I moved Shadow to his new home. Unfortunately at the time, he was suffering from an infection in his hoof, which we have been treating with the help of hot poultices, aloe vera, onion water, and some flower remedies.
While his hoof was bad, I did some gentle ground work with him, following the advice of a wwoofer* who has many years of experience with horses and is a stringent Parelli-ite (my name for anyone who follows Parelli’s every word). She taught me some…

I am very good at catching things. I mean VERY good at it! It makes me feel good to snag flying tennis balls out of the air.
I've been swimming a lot too. I wasn't sure I could swim at first, but I took a chance and leaped into the water. I found out quickly that I’m a good swimmer! Some things you’re naturally good at. Some things you have to work at.
Either way, doing something really well is very good for your inner being.
What would you like to do…

Today is your day! Take it! It is YOURS! Let's do something with this day!
It's easy to say, let’s wait until tomorrow. But that's not going to get you anywhere. So let's change that.
Today is it. Let's set a few goals. One for today, one for this week, one for this month, and one for this year. Get a pen and piece of paper and write down four things.
What would you like to achieve today?
What would you like to achieve this week?
What would…

In my previous blog post, we looked at how the interactions wild horses use within a herd to maintain harmony and unity can also be used by us humans to help develop a horse’s character in the same way.
Now let’s look at the different personality types within the society of wild horses and how that applies to our relationship with horses and what we can learn.
In nature, the spectrum of the equine personality goes from “submissive” to “dominant” but at the top… Continue

This is a very new adventure for me…….blogging. I never was much good at keeping a diary or even a weather journal. But maybe when there is a horse involved, I might do better. We’ll see how this goes.
I should start by introducing myself. You can call me Wendy but I’m also known around the barn as “CR” which stands for cockroach and that’s a long story. I might share it some day. I’ve been an avid horse person for 45+ years. Am I dating myself? I have Appaloosa horses……..whoa, wait a…

For those of you that live in a warm climate you can skip over this tip but for those of us battling the winter weather and freezing temperatures you might want to read this.
Keeping water from freezing is a real concern for many of us. Horses need their water just as much in the winter as in the summer so it is vital we keep our stock tanks from freezing over. Here are a few tips that might help in the battle of the frozen water tank.
If electricity is around try using a…

For my role here at HorseJobs.ca, I follow a lot of blogs and career newsletters. Seth Godin writes a wickedly good blog in regards to marketing and one of his posts really made me stop in my tracks.
Are resumés old fashioned and out of date?
Seth reflects on his time looking for interns and the barrage of cookie cutter resumés that he received. BORING! As a marketing guy in the marketing business he is attracted to out of the box thinking, ad sense and…

This Week in Horse History - January 11th Through January 17th
January 12, 1998 - Zippo Pine Bar, a hugely influential Quarter Horse sire, was euthanized on January 12, 1998 after suffering a stroke.
