March show!

So as I packed up the horse trailer to go home, I though to myself it had been a great day, could have been better though. But the day did not go as smoothly as id had hoped. First, my mom was unable to drive me to the show so I had to car pool me and my horse with a barn friend. Anyway, my class started at 8 so at the least had to be their at the least 7:30, so i got picked up at 7:00 (supposed to be picked up at 6:30) and we got there at 7:45! Well yes, my first show with Summer I was…

A Glorious Baby

This was an interesting week. Early on Sunday morning the black TB mare Cricket had a foal! Cute little filly, they've named her Glory for now. Since her sire is a Section A Welsh pony she is nowhere as tall as a TB foal. I find it truly amazing the amount of nurturing instincts that a new foal raise in humans, including me. Every human at the stable is oohing and aahing as if this little equine was their first grandchild.

And…

Can I panic now? No? OK.

We had another "Don't Panic" moment last week. We arrived at the barn to find our barn owner watching The Squirt. Our poor boy was having trouble eating. He would try to eat but each mouthful of his dinner dribbled from his mouth. He also was drooling a lot. Since he wasn't swallowing anything we were worried that he had a case of choke. We called the vet and put him in a stall while we waited for the vet to arrive. The Squirt didn't seem to be very distressed, but I certainly was! I did feel a… Continue

Conditions After work light enough that I was able to ride outside. Hack before and after ride

Tia Quick ride. She has not been worked outside since october/november. After my hack went to "woodchip" ring where the footing is really good. She settled right into work with rising trot and big figures 20m - 15m circles and 3 loop serpentines with me emphasing the straightness.

Quick walk break then picking up the…

"Sponsorship 101" tips for the upcoming rider

There are a lot of questions about sponsorship that pop up regularly on bulletin boards. From the other side of the sponsorship request, here are my "Sponsorship 101" tips:

• I would recommend targeting companies you are familiar with and already use and like their products or services.

• Before contacting anyone, do a bit of research on the company. Find out who they already sponsor, in what area… if they already have a ton of riders in your geographical area, your chances are… Continue

Are Wild Horses and Domestic Horses all the Same?

Ride WIth Confidence: Part 9 - Finding the Right Support

For most of us riding is easier if we have a coach or instructor to support and help us. It is always good to have another set of eyes on the ground and someone to offer encouragement to help us get over the emotional bumps.

There are a great many good riders in the equestrian world who teach. Being a good rider though does not always make someone a good teacher. Riding and teaching are two completely different skill sets. The ability to get on an athletic, energetic horse…

The What, Why, and "How to" of Shoulder-In

Shoulder-in is the father of the advanced lateral dressage movements. It does many wonderful things for your horse. Here are just some of them:

  • Shoulder-in is a suppling exercise because it stretches and loosens the muscles and ligaments of the inside shoulder and forearm. During shoulder-in, your horse passes his inside foreleg in…

Monday March 8th - Thursday March 11

Monday 8th Conditions; after work very crowded ring rode both horses in snaffle

Caddy couldn't really get him to the place he was in the last 2 days. My theory - he could have been tired or, I rode him in Tia's saddle and I think it interferred with the freedom of his shoulder. I generally ride him in an Albion slk which fits him great.

Tia by the time I got on her, the ring was full of a larger than…

Best of William Micklem - 12 - AT LAST A HIGH INTEREST INVESTMENT

I would always support investing in our coaches because the pay off is so great as they influence so many hundreds of riders over their lifetime. I agree with Sebastian Coe, the Olympic 800m and 1,500m medalist and now head of the 2012 London Olympics, that more money should go to

coaching and coaches rather than to individual performers…

Ride With Confidence: Part 8 - The Art of Staying in the Saddle

While we all know there is a huge psychological component to riding there is no denying that it is also very much a physical skill. Everyone needs to develop a balanced, stable secure seat on a horse. That requires improving your core strength and balance but there is a payoff for that effort. You will fee much more confident in the saddle if you know that you can stick there no matter what happens.

Your posture and balance also have a tremendous influence on your horse's…

Not a trail ride for Sissy's

Saturday, March 7, 2010

Riding With Confidence: Part 7 - Groundwork

I once heard Chris Irwin state in a clinic that the only real difference between groundwork and riding is that you are in a different location with respect to your horse. His point was that you can establish the relationship you want with your horse before getting into the saddle.

It is far easier to develop trust and respect and assert your leadership on the ground without your anxieties and less than perfect motor skills getting in the way. I know that without groundwork I would…
