Wheeeeeeeee! and Other Bloopers

Okay, so I recently posted about how wonderfully well our last horse show went.  Well, just so you don't think I'm getting too big for my breeches, I'm going to share with you some pics from other shows, so you can see how things normally work in our world.

My mare, Sugar, is a master of the Rider Over-Ride.  Typically happens when we are approaching an oxer that she finds particularly impressive.  Or maybe it's an oxer that I find…

Best Show Day Ever!

As you can tell by the superlatives in the title, I'm about to go overboard.  Much gushing about the Sainted Bay Mare will follow, so here's your warning to either pull on your waders or abandon ship now!

Last Saturday we showed at the Sussex County Farm and Horse Show in the Pre-Preliminary division.  Granted, 3' or thereabouts may be small…

First jumper show with my Micklem bridle

I have been using my Micklem bridle for roughly 2 weeks now, and we just finished up a jumper show today.  Other riders and trainers did notice the bridle and asked me about it, did it make a difference?  I am still in the 'testing' phase but did admit that my TB is going much better in the Micklem.  A few people did mention that they know my horse has been a bit of a head tosser before the fences and after at previous shows so they were interested in seeing us go today since several of them…

First Sleep Away Show Ever: Final Day and Thanks, Peter Leone!

Wow, if you'd told me on Day One that I'd ever be ready to go home, I'd have laughed at you.  Be that as it may, Day Five of HITS-on-the-Hot-As-Hades-Hudson IV saw me ready to head south on I-87.  However, before I did there was that small matter of Short Stirrup Hunter classes we needed to attend to.

Thankfully they Horse Show gods decided to move the classes up from early afternoon to just before 11.  In my …

First Sleep Away Show Ever: Reflections on Day 4

It's actually Sunday morning, the last day of the show, and I'm writing this while the kiddo is happily singing in the shower. The joy in her voice as she belts out whatever lyrics come to mind is the reason we did this whole away show thing. Ridiculously expensive as it it is, it's a chance for Mom and kiddo to live our passion for a little while, have some lengthy quality time… Continue

End of an Era...

On Sunday, July 17th, 2011 arguably one of the greatest eras in

international show jumping was brought to an end with the retirement of the incomparable Shutterfly. Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum decided to retire her 18 year old super-gelding after he won the 1.55 meter Warsteiner Prize at the CHIO Aachen World Equestrian Festival while he was on top,…

Resetting Goals

I am now 53 years old and I have realized I am not going to the Olympics - at least not as a rider! If fact, I am not sure I will even go watch - I did that in 1984, and while it was exciting and I learned a lot, I am not sure I want to invest the money it would take to go again.

And that is part of why I have surrendered the dream of competing at the international level. Money. It takes a Lot of it, and I do not have that kind of money, nor the access to the backing that it would… Continue

Mares: The Fairer Sex?

It is well known that a prejudice exists in the showjumping world against mares and it is not without some cause. Mares can be harder to ride, more highly strung and sensitive, and much more likely to accept suggestions rather than demands from a rider. While it is true that mares do not suit all riders, and few beginners, riders aiming at higher levels should not overlook them. That renowned sensitivity for which mares are famous can be channeled into carefulness with…

Rider to Watch for: Ben Asselin

Calgary native Ben Asselin is definitely turning heads in the Grand Prix show ring. As of last year, his career highlights include five perfect rounds at the FEI North American Junior and Young Rider Championship- landing him individual and team gold, winning the $32,500 Laramide Oil and Gas Grand Prix in the CS12* Rocky Mountain Classic I Show Jumping Tournament and named… Continue

Near Loss of the Trakehner

We all recognize the Trakehner as a world class horse. They have excelled in the hunter/jumper and dressage ring as well in various other equestrian pursuits and made numerous appearances at the Olympics for years. They have also played influence in developing more modern types of warmbloods such as Canadian and American warmbloods. So it’s hard to believe such an elegant and versatile breed was nearly lost during World War II.

Trakehners were first bred and developed in…

Saddle Up and Take Her For a Ride

There are a vast variety of horse saddles depending on the type of riding one wishes to do. The four main types of saddles are the English, Western, Military, and Asian. Of course these are very broad categories. The English saddles can be further categorized into saddles for Polo Riding, Show Jumping etc. There are a variety of other styles such as Sidesaddle, however they are less commonly used.

The English saddle is very small and horizontal, it has built in padding but…

Girl Power wins Big at the FTI Great Charity Challenge in Wellington, Florida

An all girl showjumping team sponsored by prominent showjumping owner and breeder Susan Grange scored second place and won $125,000 for their charity Horses N Heroes. For several months I have been helping Mindy Nolan-Morrow. Executive Director of the mentoring program for girls, write letters to potential sponsors and donors, construct press releases, plan events, create marketing materials and in general get the word out.  When I heard about the FTI Great Charity Challenge, I told Mindy…

To anyone who has stood with a beloved horse at the end

I love my horses, I am an otherwise sane working mum of two with a busy job on a monthly magazine but I am hooked on my horses. Maybe it's genetic I don't know, my lovely mum thinks I must be a throwback to some wild ancestor who had horses running in her blood. She shakes her head gently at me and sighs as if its all slighly bewildering this love of mine .

I am starting…
