hey! how are the shows going??? its winter down here- rainy, stormy, hail, thunder storms! i need good news! what's up on the other side of the world???
I need advice on a Welsh/standardbred mare that I presently own. No health issues/saddle has been fitted to her. She was very green when I bought her. The standardbred in her really comes out in the trot, and I am finding it very difficult to slow her down. She is ready for me to sit her trot now, but she is much too fast. She seems nervous of the bit so I rode her last summer in a bitless bridle, and converted to a dressage bridle, and she was much, much better. She tries to please but anticipates and sweats up because of her nerves. She was worried about my leg in the beginning, but she is very sensitive to the leg and seat now, and responds quite nicely. When lunging with the surcingle and side reins, she will slow her trot and put herself into a frame, but when I ride her, regardless how much preparation I seem to do, she continuously runs through my aids, bulges out through her underneath neck muscle, and trots very fast. I've tried everything I know of to break her of this habit. I can put her on the bit at the walk, but once I ask for a trot, off she goes ! We have been doing trot/walk, trot/walk - 2 steps of each (as Walter Zettl suggested) and I work in circles and surpentines. We do not have an indoor arena. She has a great disposition and willingness to work. She is very smart. Any suggestions would be appreciated. She is 8 years old now.

If ever you are worried, and your mind is full of care,
Dont think you've all the troubles, you've only got your share,
just look around for someone, with troubles worse than yours,
you're sure to find them dozens, yes, and maybe you'll find scores,
So just you try to help them, their ills & pains to bear,
...You'll find that helping others, will banish all your cares,
And soon your face will wear a smile, and life will be more gay,
And god will greet you with 'well done' at the closing of the day. fred bellinger bilateral amputee.
