Masters Dressage Freestyle Night--Drawing Inspiration From Music
The idea of the “perfect riding” music has been in my head since last Saturday night when I was fortunate enough to watch some of the best riders in the world compete in the
Masters Freestyle CDI*****. Eight riders competed, with no two rider’s
music even similar. How amazing and how fascinating. There were composed pieces, there was rock,
there was…

My trainer doesn't know everything. This, of course, is no surprise to her. It came as somewhat of a revelation to me, however. I've become so insecure in my own horsekeeping skills, that somehow I managed to convince myself that those I rely on know it all, and that my own pool of knowledge was more akin to a quickly evaporating puddle.
In our lesson yesterday, Meg and I discussed Sammie's recent training. In mid-December, I handed the reins over to Meg for full…

It's just as important to do a good free walk with your dressage horse at Training Level as it is to develop your trot and canter work. Many riders lose sight of the fact that they should pay as much attention to the medium walk and free walk as they do to the other two gaits.
First, let me define the free walk. It’s a gait of relaxation. Your dressage horse should lengthen his frame and lower his head and neck so he looks like he’s going to graze. His poll is lower…

I had the pleasure of sharing one of my ‘Dance with Horses’ clinic with Joy, a lovely lady from Denmark. I do so enjoy teaching and sharing my message and it’s so nice to see so many people from all over the world finding resonance with my Method.…

Week of February 15th Through February 21st
February 15th, 1974 - 1977 Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew was born. The horse was born with a right front hoof that curved outward and didn’t look like a champion, so he was purchased for a
mere $17,500 by Karen and Mickey Taylor and Jim and Sally…

You know all my life I have owned chestnut geldings with attitude and grey mares who were like a mum to me! It's funny how we attract the horses into our lives that mirror the lessons we need to learn. For some reason, I always get horses no one else wants to deal with, usually because they are labelled "hot and dangerous" or "wild and crazy". In every case, I just saw a horse that was grossly misunderstood and treated inappropriately for their personality and history. They usually had a…

So I have been working twice as much at Hadlow College for the past few weeks, which has extended my repetoire to classroom teaching. Holding the attention of 10-15 young minds is a challenge so much preparation has been needed on my part, to grasp fully the subjects for teaching and also to plan the session so that it is interactive, interesting and importantly full of learning hooks. Fortunately the way I have been trained to teach so far has been following the lines of the UKCC…

The last several months I have been working hard to improve my position, with probably the vain hope of getting secure enough on horseback to safely jump two foot fences. My legs have improved greatly, I have gotten my seat forward in the saddle, and I feel like I am moving with the horse more. The biggest problem remaining has been my shoulders and back. My spine is mildly curved in two places, with a minor hump, and I had begun to despair about being able to get…
