This Week in Horse History - June 7th Through June 13th
June 9th, 1973 – Thoroughbred racehorse Secretariat became the Triple Crown winner in twenty five years when he won the Belmont Stakes. He only faced four horses for the race - Sham, Twice a Prince, Private Smiles, and My Gallant. Secretariat crossed the wire thirty one lengths ahead of the next horse and…

Things had been progressing well with the wee lad. He has been a star during ground work, including lungeing and long-lining. We introduced him to a saddle and he acted like he had worn a saddle his whole life. The week of his third birthday we backed him, and he didn't put a foot wrong. First trot with a rider, also no problem. The breeder warned me that it was going almost 'too well', and we did eventually have a little hiccup. One day he felt that we were asking too much... we started to…

This week I got to try the Wellep single jointed snaffle bit on Mia. I brought both Mia's bridle with the JP Dr. Bristol and the bridle I used on Cider last week with the Wellep bit so that Debbie could make a choice. After listening to how Cider reacted to the bit Debbie decided it would be worthwhile to try the Wellep bit on Mia. Debbie had a little trouble getting the bit into her mouth, Mia saw it and did not know what to think of it, just that it was a…

Little Muffin had a chiropractor visit yesterday, so today was a day off. But, who can resist going to the barn on a weekend anyway?! So, I mucked her paddock, cleaned up stray hay, picked her feet and gave her a grooming. Then we went and ate grass, well, she did, I watched. Nothing like a horse munching her way through the grass. She's very people oriented and loves the attention.
Her little sister who is due in 5 weeks is very snuggable these days. We're not really sure…

I came across this on The Enchanted Forest.
My heart broke when I read David's letter. I would put up quite a battle if someone told me they were taking Stormy from me, which is bad enough, but to send these innocent horses to slaughter is unconscionable. Please share David's letter with everyone who loves horses,
so we can stop any… Continue

There is no doubt that early intervention is the efficient way to tackle learning difficulties and weaknesses. To nip a problem in the bud leads to both accelerated progress and happier students. This applies to both mental and physical challenges and to both humans and horses. Any behaviour or way of going that is undesirable is much more difficult and time consuming to change if it has become habitual.…

Well I fell off the eating healthy wagon yesterday. We were only at the
horse show for the day which made it difficult to really have a
schedule. We left here at 11:30 and I had a bagel with lox and cream
cheese (light) around 10:30. By the time the afternoon performance got
over, it was almost 4:00 before we got to lunch. We ended up in an
italian place that some people we knew wanted to go to. Everything was
heavy cream and there was nothing that I would call…

Most of the people who know how long I have been involved with horses are often surprised that I am a real beginner when it comes to riding and driving. I got involved with breeding Canadian horses over 10 years ago originally to help save the breed but quite quickly because I loved the breed for its own merits. I was fascinated with bloodlines and breeding for conformation, temperament and movement but with up to 17 horses and a full time job, I had no time to do anything but care for the…

Many people struggle with an idea for life thinking everything would be easier if they only knew what they wanted to do; but even if you do have one it's not all plain sailing. In fact, the true…

You may have read my waffle about a week ago on how to move forwards from the current situation. Here is a follow up to my little pondering Question Mark series.

I have had a bit of time to quietly consider variety of options and it was really helpful to read other people's views too. One message especially made me realise what really needs doing. As much as I…

If I were to measure the success of a 3-day weekend by the amount of cholesterol consumed, the amount of sunscreen spread, and amount of saddle oil transferred to my jeans, I would have to say the weekend was a success.
Saturday morning we had some errands to run and chores to do. We got to ride in the afternoon. Since it had been ten days or so since Jessie's "episode" we decided on a shakedown ride just to see how she was feeling. We did a fairly routine canal ride out to the…

One more day of work tomorrow and then off to a weekend in Wales with Ricky. I really can't wait. No jodphur boots for 2 days and a total rest to switch a light bulb on...
I would like to thank you to those who read my yesterday's post and commented either on here or via Facebook messages. I don't know anybody who is truly doing what I am doing with no real back up so it's a bit like blind leading the blind. Therefore writing it all down and "thinking aloud" is what is very helpful and…

The closer I get to the Academy going live the more I ask myself, where do I go from here...I've received some very good feedback from all I shared the drafts of the Programmes with and I'm both anxious and excited at the thought of bringing it all to life and spreading the word. It will take a long time to make it into what I see in my head it could be but I…

We must spend more time walking in the shoes of our horses to realize how we can bring a better quality of life to our equine friend. Through the process of finding a better quality of life for our horses can we find a higher consciousness and a better quality of life for ourselves.
I want people to love horses because of their spirit, depth of character and the magnetic connection we share with them rather than the service we expect from them. What stands in the way of… Continue

My only American friend in Miami in the Paso fino business commented, "Things are getting better in the paso breed it seems. Alotta trainers using boots and snaffle bits on their horses!" Paso Fino (World) Spectrum Show was held in Miami this past weekend.

So you've tried dressage, maybe even attended your first dressage show, and now you're hooked. It’s one of the fastest growing events in equestrian sports, so you are not alone. When it comes to making the switch to dressage, not all horses are created equal. Some are better suited conformationally and in…
