In this blog I will write briefly about the reasons why I have chosen the Natural Horse Management Model instead of small stalls and paddocks for my herd of seven horses.
I will share this video of my horses home and natural horse management.…

Hi Guys,
Here are some great tips for breaking that cycle of fear...
The simplest, quickest, way to relax is to BREATHE. Now, I know you're breathing or you wouldn't be reading this! ;-) But are you breathing in a way that promotes relaxation?
1. Let's find out. First, let's dissect what you do when you inhale. Stand up. Take in a really deep breath. Did your shoulders go up? If they did, you're just breathing in your upper chest. And there's always tension…

With all the articles and clinics and "professionals" giving their two cents on equine behavior these days, I figured I might as well throw my two cents in and see where it got me. Equine behavior is a very broad subject; it can include anything from cribbing and other
annoying vices, to the language of
Equus as made famous by
Monty Roberts. Being an inquisitive and active…

I have lost count of the number of times that my husband has asked the whereabouts of something and my reply has been "Its in the barn". The problem is that inevitably it is a one way trip. For items such as digital thermometers it is understandable... husbands are surprisingly squeamish about using a thermometer that has been used on a horse. "I washed it really well!!???".
The list of what migrates to the barn is as varied as it is long though for the most part they are items from the…

Drug Compounding: Is price more important than safety? When talking with many of my friends who are horse owners it became clear to me that most people do not understand the difference between licenced drugs, generic drugs and compounded drugs. Since compounding tragedies have been in the news lately with the most recent being the 21 polo ponies dying in Florida I thought I would put this together to help horse owners make informed…

Today we were off to a schooling show with a UK judge who was in doing a clinic yesterday. She marched over the wooden bridge to the outdoor schooling ring, where she was very good. Easy warm up, although it takes a bit to get some forward going. Into the ring and off we go.
So, let us then enumerate the rider errors that caused her to score under 70:
Stiff hands into the halt.
Inconsistent contact, but better.
Started a 20m circle when it should have…

I am giving a movie making a go ;) A Bad Go! I figured, however, that if I don't try and make any videos I won't ever get better. Considering there is no way I can afford to pay any movie making specialist to make my videos it'
s a case of if you can't have what you like you better like what you've got ;)
So here it is. We are doing Case Studies which means the riders are being videoed and here is a little short s
nippet into yesterday's fun & games. Excuse poor quality,…

If there is ever a coffee/tea shortage it might be our fault. We have been running on fumes as the daunting task of caring for The Squirt's wounds continues. We are leaving the wound open, as the vet advised, so that it can drain. Hopefully the air will help speed the healing... and now discharge, blood and moisture aren't being held against the tissues. The Squirt figured out that we were giving him meds and started to refuse to eat them, so now we have to crush/dissolve his antibiotic pills…

I just got to ride once this week, and I am having to get used to getting up a half-hour earlier so I can escape the worst effects of the heat. It isn't too easy for me to change what I do, and getting up earlier is among the things that I find hard to adjust too, but anything to escape the heat.
My ride went pretty well, Mia seems to like the Wellep bit fine, even with my hands deteriorating in the heat. No contact or light…

I breed Canadian horses and their tendency to be easy keepers is both a blessing and a curse. I am constantly trying to battle their weight and worry about weight related conditions such as insulin resistance, laminitis, and Cushings. Like with humans there are so many "diets" but what it really comes down to is a well balanced diet with the calorie intake appropriate for the activity level, and exercise.
The horse equivalent of the Canada Food Guide is the National Research Council…

Sunday
I arrived the arena at 7am and one volunteer, Keely, was there. The Downunder folks hadn't shown up yet. Shana was rehearsing with Jillaroo for her trick riding demo, so we watched for a few minutes. When the crew came in our first chore was to wipe down all the graphics and displays and then fill in any missing merchandise from the previous night.
Clinton had had a crew doing interviews with guests, crew, vendors, and…

De-spooking Your Horse
I have a 4 year old Belgian that I ride. He is pretty solid, but as a young horse he does spook occasionally. I have been trying you method of leading him up to a scary object a step at a time and it works very well (especially with the horse eating manure spreader!). My question is, if he spooks and wheels out away from me do I just continue on with what I'm doing as if nothing happened or should I stop and try to calm him down and back him up to a safe…
