A notice to all horses, beware and keep an eye on your carrots!
There have been sightings of a large rabbit lurking in human-yards around the globe. He has been seen carrying a basket full of eggs, so I fear that he has already stolen from the hens. Take care to guard your carrots... this rabbit seems to be planning something big this weekend!

Last weekend the weeds in the garden were up to mid-calf. The alternating rain and sunshine, along with my benign neglect, helped them to thrive. They demanded attention and I knew if I didn't intervene quickly they would soon become a much bigger problem. Add to this that we had the nursery delivering a fifteen foot raywood tree for the front yard and I had to dig a 30" x 30" hole to accommodate it, and the prospect of riding was not looking good.
I decided to use riding as my…

The end of term at school (early of course) saw us making the mahusive trip into the depths of east anglia for Dell’s first Intermediate Novice (IN). Despite gloomy predictions of a long
journey from everyone ., we arrived early! – That one joins my optimistically
short list of “journeys that take half the time Google says they will”....
Dells first intermediate test meant it was also his first test I had…

When I went out this morning, Pickles made that encouraging "hungry horsey" sound and seemed happier than she did yesterday.
There is a look that horses get in their eyes that tells you what their thinking. Sometimes it's easier to read than others. But Pickles is an honest horse and I think she knows she's safe now.
We trimmed her mane last night and put some moisturizer on her feet. She is still walking a little sticky this morning…

I was in my arena today working with my new horse, Clementine. She is four years old and she is one of those truly great horses that come along so infrequently. She is sensitive, responsive and athletic, and riding her is a bit like driving a Ferrari. Most importantly she is sane, calm and intelligent. Her previous owner taught her to go fast and straight with her nose… Continue

Horse Rescue: She gave all she had to people who abused her.
Sometimes you do things that just don't make sense. This is one of them.
We got another horse today. Not just any horse - a starved, abused ex-racehorse.
She is in horrible shape; She's got rain rot all over her skin, her ribs are sticking out, and her feet are pretty messed up.
We've done this before and had great success, but that doesn't make it any less crazy - or any less expensive. But we are also…

I am in the process of evaluating the concept of a Premiere Equine Facility which will feature a rehabilitation, training and education for horses and riders.
I have developed a survey, which is easily completed in a few minutes. I am soliciting information and opinions from the horse community on such a facility to be built near the shores of Georgian Bay, north of the Town of Wiarton.
Wiarton is located in southwestern Ontario at the base of the Bruce Peninsula, home of the…

It has rained for three days just prior to the our club's yearly horse show. Everything was under water when we arrived. A few of the men rounded-up some shovels and dug some trenches to help drain the water from the Arena.
I hung out with a few other rides, and we sat along side of the arena, just waiting for someone to hit the dirt. We were actually taking bets on which rider would be the dirtiest by the end of the day. Not good, I know, but this was in my younger, more naive…

A good outing with Robin today. We were hoping to minimize our encounters with dirt bikes and ATV’s, so we went over the rocky pass of Lovejoy Butte – similar to the route we took back on March 8th – it was nice to feel how much better Belle is handling tough terrain. My saddle slipped forward on her going down the steep incline, and I am seriously thinking about putting a crouper on the saddle. It will be a bit of a challenge as my Wintec all purpose saddle doesn’t have…

I was reading an article the other day about some scientists that were figuring out whether horses learned through watching or not and I found it fascinating that they came up with the idea that horses do not learn by watching other horses. It’s just so silly that they don’t know that they do!
When I went to Verde Valley School, aged 14 years, I took my three year old Arab horse with me so I would have a horse to ride. I wanted to show her but there weren’t any horse… Continue

Show season is upon us and the planning process is well underway for horse owners everywhere as they look forward to “getting out there”.
Ideally, the horse is fit and ready and the owner/rider is prepared for what will hopefully be a successful year.
This is the opportune time to review insurance coverages you have in place (or may need) to protect you, the horse, tack and equipment, trailers etc. while you are travelling about to various horse show…

After some years into my marriage, I made a phone call to three other Horsewomen I knew that would change my marriage forever.
The phone call went something like this. "I want to start a prayer group to
pray for my husband, otherwise I am going to file for a divorce."
To my surprise, the other three women instantly agreed saying almost the same thing about the Cowboys in their lives.
Within a week, we meet and one of the wives had…

They say that only 10 percent of all colic cases will result in surgery.
I was at work last November, it was morning and it was about 10:15 when I got the phone call that all horse owners dread. “He’s colicing” the voice on the other line said. My trainer had just given the horse a work out, had a good ride and
her working student had un-tacked him in the stall. He looked like he wanted to
roll in the stall but when he wouldn’t get up right away she knew…
