Puppy breath is one of those addictive smells that isn’t actually pleasing aromatically. Still, who doesn’t inch their nose dangerously close to those tiny teeth, just for a whiff of puppy breath?
One bright Sunday morning while driving to the barn to ride, I saw a sign on a ranch gate: Heeler Pups. I’d recently lost an elderly dog- I think he might have turned the…

Well, my little girl has an owie, I'll call a vet in the morning. Took me two days to figure out which leg it was in. She doesn't like to make things easy on me. She's all clipped up and looking fantastic. She's the only horse I know that is the same colour clipped as she is not clipped, and just as shiny. I do love my little angel.
Back to lameness. She's got a slight swelling on the right fore around the fetlock. Current theory is that she tweaked herself (doesn't…

Hey bloggers,
This week's blog is based on fashionable winter clothing and apparel for riders for the upcoming winter season. At Baker's, we have a variety of super comfortable winter items that are both fashion forward and very appealing. All of the products mentioned in this week's blog will be great for Christmas gifts for both equestrians and non-equestrians looking to be trendsetting this winter.
The number one important thing to have as part of your winter wardrobe is a…

It has been an exciting week riding.
Debbie has a new mare at her barn, a piebald (black and white pinto) Tennessee Walking horse mare named Quizzy. Since Quizzy still has hind shoes on, with trailers, Debbie does not want to turn her out in the mare pasture yet, but has been turning her out in the area around the riding rings to run around. The mare pasture is right next to this turn out area, and Mia, lonely and friendless since her best friend was sold, quickly…

Thursday November 1 2012 We got to the barn late just to groom and wash the mud off of Coopers feet. He had a few burrs again and was tender on his left stifle. Guess he might have slipped in the mud maybe while trying to run away from flying feet. He is a little instigator and always getting hurt trying to work his way up in the herd. He is number 3 right now and goes after the 2 leaders, who are both big boys, one of them over 17 hands.
After cleaning and drying his legs & muddy…

Can anyone give me tips on how long my horses forelocks should be? It's so long, I wonder if it hampers his vision! Is it better to trim them shorter? Canadians are a new world for me, appreciate any advice!

In a normal week I probably suggest, chirp, cajole, beg, and sometimes yell- the word forward at least 3 million times. This week it’s twice that, and I’m not even to my busiest lesson days yet.
Sometimes I mix in some clucking noises for variety.
Not that I am complaining. Not a bit. I owe a debt myself. Every time I utter…

Flight response: A horse’s instinct as a prey animal, to flee from perceived danger.
Dr Andrew Mclean says “A structure deep inside the brain called the amygdala, sorts out stimuli as to whether they are fearful or not. Fearful stimuli receive special recognition by the brain in terms of remembering - unlike other information, once learned fearful…

I actually got to ride on the mini trail twice this week, and both time I was riding an Arabian!
Wednesday morning Debbie called me saying they were going to be fixing the footing on her ring, big equipment, lost of noise, etc.. Since I was still suffering the effects of a head cold (BAD NEWS for us with MS) I was willing to wait a day. So I got my lesson on Thursday on the Arab gelding Mick. The fence on the far end of the riding ring was completely down, and the…

Hey bloggers,
This week, in the spirit of the Halloween weekend and upcoming Halloween day, we are going to base our blog on an equine Halloween. Every year lots of people dress up themselves and their horses for fun horsie themed Halloween pictures and to see just how cooperative their horse can be wearing some fun outfits. A great idea to have this Halloween is to make a barn Halloween party. Horses and riders should dress up and compete for the best Duo Halloween costume, and the…

“Will you come over and ride our horse?” she asked. “We know he’s a dressage horse, we just don’t know how to cue him, but if you rode him… He does that trot in one place thing.”
(I already knew they bought this elderly horse from their ‘trainer’, who tranquilized him for them to try out. That was when I asked them to refer to their ‘trainer’ by some other name.)

Last week I finally got my leather snaffle. Since I re-started riding Bobby I have been thinking hard about what might be irritating his mouth. I read the ad about those super pricey titanium bits and I was looking for an alternative that I could afford that also was temperature neutral and did not have any electric currents or magnetism going through the bit. I was really excited to get my leather snaffle, at least until I measured the mouthpiece, 2 centimeters wide and…

This is going to end up a rather large blog, that could be seen as a rant, but it's not really intended as such. Just keep in mind that this is my opinion, from my experiences and you are free to disagree.
I find the more I browse the internet or go spectate at shows the angrier and frustrated I get at many of today's horse people's attitudes. I've banned myself from looking at riding photo's for the most part or getting involved in any kind of training conversation as I usually…

The wind positively howled. There was sun, not that you could feel it. The horses didn’t want turn out. It was 20 degrees warmer in the south-facing runs and there’s not much windbreak on our prairie pasture. The horses that were turned out looked longingly at the barn and I knew the season has truly changed.
I was mucking a pen, coat zipped against the wind and my warmest Elmer Fudd hat tied down, when my phone rang. A client re-scheduled her lesson that afternoon. I don’t blame her;…
