The Benefits of Keeping a Horse Riding Journal

You have just finished cooling down from what, in your mind, was the best lesson you have had in months…

As you are tending to your horse, that afterglow feeling is radiating from you; the feeling of achievement and success.
However, you notice that while you can look back over your lesson and remember details now; come two or three days time, when you are trying to replicate that feeling, you just cannot seem to repeat what you actually done to achieve it in the…

Designs for your Favorite OTTB

Thanks to Natalie Keller Reinert and her wonderful blog Retired Racehorse I stumbled upon these wonderful saddle pads!  You can proudly display your horse is an OTTB every time you ride!  I ordered the white one and can't wait to get it!  I am hoping that they do other colors and keep adding to the collection.  They also will donate $5 to an OTTB charity.  Be sure to check them out!…

Taylor-Made Christmas

I hope everyone had a wonderful and merry Christmas!  Taylor definitely was a good boy as Santa left him a stocking full of treats and not coal!  (I guess he forgave the couple of times he's tried to kick me recently-ha!).  I have spent a lot of time bonding with Taylor...a LOT.  Before I started his training, I spent my time grooming him and sitting with him.  I still love it when we have the chance to just hang out together.  With that said, he can read me.  Somehow he just knows when I…

Transition

I brought Taylor to his new home at the end of June.  I am boarding him at a stable that has rolling hills, a nearby lake, and a pasture in a valley.  It's a beautiful place!

Let's just say Taylor was not impressed in the beginning.  In fact, he was mad at me.  This summer has been brutally hot, and Taylor is not one that really enjoys the heat.  He is the horse you will always find in the shade, if he can find a patch.  Unfortunately, his transition pen at his new home didn't have…

The Chosen Human

Taylor had been at Race Horse Reclaim Thoroughbred Rescue for a little over six months when I decided he was the one.  I had been volunteering for a few months so I was getting to know the horses and like any normal horse lover I loved them all.  However, my heart belonged to Taylor for he picked me as much as I picked him.  The first day I was there volunteering I was standing next to his pen watching…

My New Exracehorse Taylor

This is a former post on my blogHoofbeats Return

Sorry I have been bad about blogging recently, but I have had a lot going on.  The most important of which was my recent adoption of an exracehorse named Taylor.  Talk about falling in love!  It may really have been a classic example of love at first sight.  I volunteer at an exracehorse rescue…

To Lesson or Not To Lesson?

That should not even be a question!

I’ve met many people who are fascinated by horses enough to want to ‘get’ their own horse. Often, acquaintances or people I’ve met will ask me my opinion about buying a horse – where do they start?

I run through all the typical questions with them: Why do you want a horse? Are you aware of all the aspects of horse ownership? Have you budgeted for all the upkeep costs (and we go through the breakdown – the…

Back in the Saddle and taking Lessons now

July 2/11

Finally got back in the saddle. I rode around at a walk only for about 15 minutes and got off. I was tense but things went well, just me being worried. Another boarder got on Cooper after and gave him a little workout. They did great together, an experienced rider makes him look so good.

July 5/11

We have finally started taking training lessons together with Gail Haynes at Five Star Ranch where I board. At first I was very nervous and tense and almost…

Resetting Goals

I am now 53 years old and I have realized I am not going to the Olympics - at least not as a rider! If fact, I am not sure I will even go watch - I did that in 1984, and while it was exciting and I learned a lot, I am not sure I want to invest the money it would take to go again.

And that is part of why I have surrendered the dream of competing at the international level. Money. It takes a Lot of it, and I do not have that kind of money, nor the access to the backing that it would… Continue

Little Girls and Riding Lessons

Yesterday, I gave Bella Benedict another riding lesson on Gunny. This wouldn't be so significant, after all I teach horseback riding lessons for a living. But Belle is just 6 yrs old and she has to clean corrals to EARN her own lessons. Her family is Very tight financially, so I offered Belle a chance to join the 'work to ride' program. She works Hard to earn enough credits to get to ride.

So, this was her 3rd lesson, and we worked on developing a SMOOTH whoa - a nice easy slow pull…

Fall must be over!!! All I see are clowds, rain and snow!

Well, I guess I will catch up on my paperwork and redo my website. Planing lessons for the winter and the coming year. I want to make a lot of changes next year so if you have any ideas please e-mail me @ classicaldressage@earthlink.net.

On another note, Belle is still recuperating from her allergic reaction to the rhino shot. I am working her now in the round pen three times a week. I will wait to ride her till spring. It doesn't…

October 12th 2010

Feeling pretty good today. I got two nice comments from fellow barnmice. Those kind of comments help put things into perspective without being discouraging. Thanks ladies!

Today, I rode Harley and Lazz. I basically worked on the same thing with both of them but was a little easier on Lazz. Harley is more used to what I was asking. I got a few nice roll backs with Harley and also some good transitions. He is still quite lazy but that isnt going to change in just a couple rides. He…

Life of a teenager in lessons

So today was a good lesson!

By good, I mean I was put on what I like to call the demon horse from hell, aka Dante(that's his actual barn name, I find it very fitting). And he was good with me!

Usually, he is terrible with me. He usually tries to bite me, I mean he bares his teeth like a dog and stretches out his neck, and if possible he will take a snap. He also like to charge people in the field. (Most of this at me was brought on by me, brought on by me I mean I wasn't… Continue

Life of a teenager in lessons

I am starting this blog for one reason only. Because I feel like writing about my riding experiences, and suck at keeping a journal. That and hopefully some of you will get a laugh at my expense!

So, I had a lesson last night. I was saved by my instructor being absent and another instructor taking her place. Why was I saved? Because my instructor likes to push me and as soon as she sees a flaw she tells me to fix it, and she usually spots them right when they happen so I can't even… Continue

I always knew she was brilliant...

So, last night Maggie and I had a lesson. We were outfitted with the running martingale, which is working well, although it got adjusted a bit tighter. Beauty of the running, it only engages when you need it and it doesn't help you actually ride your horse or get it round. It also takes away Maggie's favourite game of throwing her head in the air and doing whatever the hell she really wants to do... always a bonus.

So, we warmed up and then out comes the longe whip. Now we're…

More insights

After another weekend of Havoc... And I mean literally.

So, the dam of my little Havoc, her name is Snip, had her shoes pulled on Thursday. Now she had a bad case of laminitis two years ago and has 23.5 degrees of rotation in her right fore. So, the front of her foot doesn't exactly grow all that well. Which is why we'd pull her shoes and see if she could go barefoot and quit cracking up what little foot she has. Apparently not. P3 is pretty close to the sole, she must have…
