Hi Catherine,
Welcome to the group!I am Connie and I retrain/rehome abused horses. My friends have a small farm where we work out of.I have a QH mare named Risky and she was badly abused, but she has come a long way and we are best friends. your horse sounds lovely! Take care :)
Hi all! I thought that this group was a great idea. I,m just past forty and have been around horses all my life. I seem to be coaching alot more than riding lately even though I managed to find an amazing horse recently, Bobby or 'Bocastle,s Black Beauty' Weve trained him to be a therapy horse ( I teach at TEAD) but he is also coming along in hunter jumper(thats what I showed in when I was younger) At 16.2, he is an amazing ride! Look forward to chatting!
Hey Gary...welcome to the group!I am Connie and my friends and I retrain/rehome abused horses.
Do you ride english/western?I ride both and trail riding is my greatest passion.Happy Riding!
You are welcome Patti....I am sure your mare will come round...keep us posted! My QH mare Risky was badly abused and she has come a long way with lots of massage, groundwork. She is with me for the long haul too!Forgot to say...if your mare bucks, yes, check your saddle if it pinches her or ill-fitting and if you could get your hands on a bareback pad...try her with that.Take Care....Connie
Patti, if you would like to have it, I would like to gift you the Horsewomanship Handbook, some of the ideas might be helpful - it's an ebook download, email me at katharinechrisley@yahoo.com with your email address and I'll attach it to a message to you (I won't share your info)
Hi Patti
I would try the 5 games from Parelli on joining up. I also agree with Connie, try lots of ground work until you find she begins to trust you. Play games with her. Make lots of soft contact with your hands so she can feel the nice gentle touch. The idea is get her to respect you as the "alfa" horse, and not be afraid of you. Then you can start your relationship. Also if she is bucking, I would check the saddle to make sure that it is not pinching her. Just because she bucks it does not mean she is misbehaving, something might be hurting somewhere.
Just wanted to say hi to everyone. I have been riding for a couple of years and it's taken over my life. I live in Toronto but spend most of my time at the barn. Love it!
