That's my feeling, too. Preferably a nice, clean back!

I agree bareback pads with no stirrups seem to be a little better, but under certain conditions still slide and feel uncomfortable. "Bareback" means bareback ie. nothing but you on the back. Call me old school but anything else is unsafe.

I also dislike bareback pads, although I suppose some are better than the one I bought. I have heard it said that the ones with no stirrups are much safer than the ones with. The one I bought had stirrups, and I felt like I was riding a greased pig! The really strange thing was the way it made my hips swivle with every step she took. I had kept it clean, and returned it to the tack store.

I hate bareback pads I see them as very dangerous. Any one I have ever tried always slipped eventually. I just don't trust them. My daughter would ride with just a cotton cooling sheet with the mane to grab onto. Thought it kind of weird at first but she said it was way better than a bareback pad. Felt safer. She would only ride at the walk cooling out with a wet horse.

I can relate Gail, short rider - tall horse. It makes life interesting, especially on trail. Always looking for a log, stump or rock. I really notice the difference riding bareback, I definately feel the core muscles working more. I bought a bareback pad this winter but I don't really like it. It tends to slip sideways. The problem might be that the stirrups are a bit too long and I really have to reach which throws off my balance. Luckily I have a built in oh s... strap - a nice full mane.
