Wow Jan!....poor Nuke! It sounds like he is a perfectly healthy horse except for this problem he has had. That should go a long way to his complete recovery. My prayers are with him. Is he a competitive horse or a good old school master? Hopefully all this won't keep him out of action for too long.

Glad to hear some good news about Nuke. I imagine that he is on anticoagulants to combat the thrombosis. Often with infections we never do find the source, but they magically disappear. I hope that is the fact for Nuke. My thoughts are with this horse.
I am so new to the horse world, just started ridding lessons this Jan. I know I don't even come close to your knowledge of horses, but do you compete? I am sorry that I don't know about the competing world, but I am learning.
Have a great day to all the 40 over horse lovers. It is a beautiful warm day here in Welland, On. I plan on getting out and ridding "Lottie" today to sooth my soul, then back to work tomorrow, 12 hr shift.

Hi, Barbara:

Yes. My friends arrived from the coast yesterday afternoon, so I didn't get back to all of you.

He was better yesterday afternoon, after having an extensive workup by the internist. They catheterized him and collected urine for both urinalysis and culturing. Debbie (the internist) went over his gut with an ultrasound and found nothing abnormal and no adhesions. His abdominal tap was normal but they're culturing that too. He has a total thrombosis in one jugular vein and a partial in the other, both due to catheterization, so they are culturing both sites, and he now has a cephalic catheter. On Debbie's advice Bob (surgeon) is keeping him on a combination of antibiotics intravenously until the WBC counts stabilize - they think he's got an infection somewhere but are having trouble locating it. He has and never has had a fever. He didn't even swell around the incision, and has now had his stitches out. They put him on a saline drip on Tuesday afternoon after the kidney values and electrolytes were so out of whack, and those have now normalized.

Right now we're just going day by day with him. His recovery from the actual torsion/surgery seemed excellent, with none of the usual issues. Deb will continue to monitor him on a daily basis, and will e-mail me her reports. Bob will stay in touch with me via phone daily - I do feel much better being that much closer (now I'm only 5 hours away, instead of a day's flying).

I'm glad Christa has Whimsey to think about. They are entered in the show this weekend. I competed Whimsey very successfully last year, but this will be Christa's first time out with her, and she's very nervous, which at least is diverting her from Nuke's situation.

The rest of my friends from the coast arrive today, and the crew from Calgary tomorrow, so it will be a busy and hopefully enjoyable show for all of us. The weather is supposed to cooperate!

Nathan ships out of Illinois on Friday, and will be in Calgary on Monday, so we will drive out Monday to pick him up. We'll get home again Tuesday afternoon.

Onwards and upwards!! Thanks for the support - it's very helpful!

Jan, any word on Nuke? It is so stressful when someone we love is sick, weither they are an animal or human.

Me too, Barbara! When I turned 51 this year all my barn friends said I'm 51 when I go to work, but 15 when I'm with my horse. It's true!

Me too Barbara! When I'm on my horse riding I feel the same way! I also feel that way when I'm with teenagers, which is where I'm going for the weekend to hang out with 17,000 teenagers at a youth conference in Edmonton. Some people think I'm crazy but I feel energized like riding my horses. :-)
