Cathy the right fiddle heads taste much like asparagus. If like the asparagus, then you will no doubt like the fiddle heads, just make sure that you pick the right ones. lol

I over the fiddle heads, haven't had any for a few years now. I remember one spring we were riding in Kentucky, Mammoth cave I think...and there were fiddle heads all over the place I picked them all and told everyone that I would cook up a mess of them for supper that nigiht...they all thought that I was goofy (jury is still out on that one) anyway I was as good as my word, and..when I was cooking I was treating myself to a rum and cola as well,,, then another,. It was time to try the fiddle heads, yuck, they were not near as tasty as the one I had picked at home...but I had promised to let them all taste...so I did, Oh wow, no body was impressed...they were the wrong ferns...oh me...they never let me forget that, ...friends for ya. lol

I believe there is a northcoast native dish that is made with "skunk cabbage" I've never tasted it though. Also, they are only good at certain times of year, kind of like "fiddle heads", you know the first shoots of the fern out in the wild in the spring. The older leaves can be used for roasting fish over the fire as well.

Those flowers sound beautiful - I've never seen or heard of them. I have only been to Canada once before (Toronto in 2006), but I'm coming over to Alberta in August this year and I'm really excited! In answer to the questions about memory and grey hair then, yes I fit the bill! And I definitely fit the bill in terms of failed relationships! I am now happily on husband number three - and he is my soul mate and groom, chief stable lad and general support crew, so I consider myself very fortunate indeed!

Only if you're a skunk.

skunk cabbage! that's not something that you eat is it?

Yeah we weren't supposed to pick them either, but when you're little that doesn't matter. These are the same, about 1-3 inches in diameter, white, purple or pink with 3 points. I miss them here, we are too dry for them in mid-northwestern B.C.
Further west from here like Terrace or Prince Rupert they would have them, they even have skunk cabbage.

They are the Ontario flower, they are much smaller than a lilly, and it is against the law to pick them. They only last a week or so each year.
