Hello, I'm new to this group. I am well over 40 and think that riding at an older age is more important than ever! If it was not for my horses I would not be in very good shape both physically and mentally! They keep me on my toes. ^--^
I too am starting to feel my age, but refuse to give up riding! I have found that some simple strengthening/stretches go a long way towards how I feel and can ride. For example, legs shoulder width apart, bend straight forward toward the ground and back up again to loosen my waist. I go slow so as not to overextend. By about rep. #15 out of 20 I'm considerably looser than when I start. I do similar things for ankles, knees, hips, arms, shoulders and neck. Only takes a few minutes. That said, if I know I'm going for a longer and/or faster ride (I'm in competitive trail), I'll take a preventative one ibuprofen one acetaminophen "cocktail" prior to the ride. Hope you find something that works for you!
Bill, my recipe on evenings after a challenging lesson is Advil, a glass of red wine, and a hot bath. Oh, and we are installing a hot tub with LOTS of therapeutic jets. ;-)
Massage therapy is a wonderful thing too!
It is all so worth it - I figure as I start to age, it's "use it or lose it", especially as I see my mom terribly disabled now with osteoarthritis.
Hi Bill, welcome!
You might look into Gamma linolenic (sp?) acid (GLA). It works as an antiinflammatory and does not cause ulcers. It encourages the body to produce anti-inflammatory chemicals instead of inflammatory chemicals. At least that is what I remember reading 17 years ago.
You can get it from Evening Primrose seed oil, Black Current seed oil, Borage seed oil, and hemp seed oil and powder.
I use it on the mare I ride (hemp seed powder.) When she does not get it she sort of just wants to freeze up in one place and when she moves it feels like she has sand in her joints. When she gets it she moves smoothly, limps a lot less, and I never get the feeling that her body is frozen in place.
I also find that just walking while riding and concentrating on moving with the horse's back helps my stiffness. Sometimes certain joints of my back and legs vehemently protest the trot.
Then I also use the old stalwarts of aspirin, coffee and hot water. I can't drink coffee before riding because it makes my hands shake, but it can really help afterwards.
Hey everyone! Just a hello to you and glad to see this Group. I'm way over 40 now and starting to feel it!
How do you cope with aching joints and challenges now that you're not as limber as when 20 or 30? ;-)
Hi! I'm a 55 yr old woman who just started riding a year ago. It's the best thing I've ever done for myself! I find riding and hanging at the barn to be the best therapy to relieve the stress of the day.
