Actually I think it would be a good idea if all barns insisted on all ages wearing helmets. Having seen some of these posts and the accidents that people have had happen to them. Anyhow, it has turned into an interesting topic. On another vein, has anyone noticed a lot of bot eggs on the horses about now? How about mud fever? Gail.

I never get on my big boy without a helmet - and not because he's a "problem." It's too easy for some freak stumble or spook to happen. My hairstyle may be destroyed but my brain - hopefully - will still be intact. Everyone at my barn - including the trainers - are required to wear a helmet. No helmet - no ride.

I always wear a helmet except when I'm competing V, when I wear a top hat. I always wear a top hat in the FEI division as well, but on younger, greener horses (or any horse which hasn't completely proven itself) I wear a helmet/harness. I never train without one. I received a serious brain injury 11 years ago when my stallion tripped and fell, and I was knocked unconscious and ended up with a blood clot in my brain and serious neurological problems. It's the only riding injury which scared me, and since then I have ridden in a helmet for training everyone, clinics, lessons, competition etc., with the few exceptions noted above.

They're a lot more comfortable now than they used to be, to the extent that I sometimes forget I have mine on...sort of like my seatbelt!

Don't replace it every time I drop it but about once a year as it falls off the saddle rack many times during the winter or the horse drops it. Gail.

They sure have and for the better I must say. Gail.

I always wear a helmet. When I began riding lots of people never did, even jumping, unless it was for showing, and then even juniors wore these "hard hats" without using the elastic chin straps. Adults were expected to show and hunt in derbies, just stiff felt, no chin strap. Times have changed.

I can't find the message from the lady who wants to join this group and asked if she could. Join away! Welcome when you do get here.

I must say that I have a few friends who have a lot of excuses as to why they won't wear a helmet. Too hot, won't help, my horse never does any thing wrong. We all have a choice !! Gail.

Finally, I have added some shots of the horse in the snow Dec. 23 2008. I will take the camera tomorrow and get a few more taken. Maybe even include myself with the extra lbs. still on from last winter. Gail.

Yes, I always wear my brain bucket when riding. I don't much like it as it gets so hot and my hair is a disaster but I don't like the alternative. We are all riding such powerful beasties...we cannot ever become complacent.
I have to admit that I don't replace it every time I drop it.
