Well said, B McDaniel! Maybe we had to lose it to appreciate it so much now.

Hi! I'm just joining Barnmice and am really glad to find this group. I hope to get a lot of good ideas and advice from everyone. I'm a re-rider (taking almost 30 years off) so I'm reacclimating myself to the horse world. It sure is different! I'm having a lot of fun and every day when I go to the barn, I still can't believe I've been blessed to be able to do something I love again. For us forever horsie folks, there just won't ever be anything that can compare in our lives. :-)

Thanks for the info Jackie. I am also currently feeding my mare beet pulp to put some weight on her and to increase her fluids along with stabilized rice bran. Is rice bran one of those omega-6 fatty acids that increases inflammation?
I am all for LSD (long slow distance) as many years ago I conditioned an old gelding for my first endurance ride. Little did I know after I vet checked him in that he was really around 22 years old and not the 17 that I had been told he was. lol He left all the other horses in the dust. He hated anyone to pass him.

I am also a firm believer in hills. I love going up and down hills and mountains rather than the flats. I had read once that "1 mile on the hills equals 10 miles on the flats". We have hills and mountains all over this area even though we live in the desert. Our area is called high desert with mountains going as high as 7000 ft in some areas but mostly around 4-5000 ft.

Janet--I get hemp powder at the health food store. It is a source of Gamma linoleic (sp?) acid (GLA) an Omega-6 fatty acid which serves as an anti-inflammatory (other omega-6 fatty acids seem to increase inflammation). There is or was a site hempforhorses.com that has some good information. I use 1 to 2 scoops a day of the powder. The site seems to say to use more, but I do not think that seemingly miraculous results are good for old horses.
I also suggest that you just walk your mare (up & down hills if possible) for several months to leg her up. Older horses take longer to get fit.

I live in AZ and this is our slow season. Not much riding unless you do organized riding in arenas at night. It's too hot to ride during the day unless you get up at the crack of dawn (who me?). I spent too many years leaving to go to work at 0530. (;>

Hi Jackie, I'm new on this site. I really like it though. I think I'm addicted already. I'm interested in your comment about riding Mia and how stiff she became when you didn't give her the hemp-powder supplement. What is that? I have never heard of it. I also have an aged arab mare (24 yo) that I used to do endurance with. Though she's not crippled she does seem just a bit stiff at times and I am thinking of getting her back on the trail.

With a lot of determination and with procrastination of the chores I hate, I've been able to crowd 5 rides into 4 days while the weather was good. Boy your riding skills improve when you do that. And the horses love it! On the other hand, the flower beds are overrun, the house is a mess, and I can't remember what my husband looks like....

I got to ride Mia (the mare in my picture) today, just a exercise session since my teacher, Debbie, has gone on a well-deserved vacation. She (Mia) seems stiffer than before, so I think I should not have stopped her hemp-powder supplement yet. Lots of walking, some trotting, lots of weaving in and out around the jumps. Now I'm real tired, but glad I rode.

WOW 29 members and growing! I have barely had time to check in. With haying and company coming and also the passing of my dear God Mother:( My husband is tearing our old deck apart to boot! Don't you just love the busy day's of summer?? It goes so fast__________> What is keeping you guys busy these days? I only wish I had more time to ride. I firmly plan to spend all of August and September riding consistently.
