They are supposed to do that here too, but many schooling shows don't bother. It can be a free for all so to speak without an EC Steward on hand to keep the chaos to a manageable level.

here in nz they use cc flags on the jumps, so everyone knows they are to jump in the same direction.

This was my 2nd show one thing that really bothered me was when every one was schooling it was Chaos, people jumping all over the place, Trainers yelling at students, I think it really should be more organized. They should do walk, trot, canter, then have every one do the jumps,, Everyone should do the same jumps and going the same way.

Linda;

I know what you mean about showing. I enjoy the training aspect, like bringing Monty around from a pace into what has developed into a beautiful trot brings me much more satisfaction than impressing a judge. In our last training session just before the show, he gave me two strides of a relaxed and balanced canter, rather than scrambling around the ring trying to figure out where his feet are suppose to go! To me that was just so exciting!
Trails are great too, and that is where I do spend most of my riding time.
I don't know how many shows I will do with Monty, but I do want to promote the breed and that seems to be the best way to do it. So with that objective in mind, it really dosn't matter too much how many classes I win or what the judge thinks so that will make it a lot more fun.
When I get the pictures from the show organized I will try to add them to the main page here on the site and then let you all know that they are there.

i agree with cindy. and like i said- set small goals for yourself and take pride and pleasure when you feel you have reached them. all the better if someone else is there to video you, so you can review and check your progress.

We must remember that each judge has certain criteria which they use to judge by, But...they also have personal preferences that get in the way...with some judges more than others. Some judges actually don't know what that are doing or high very little experience judging and miss the goodness in the horses. Certainly this may sound unjust but judges are human too and fall woefully short of our high expectations. My suggestion....take with a grain of salt and remind yourself that the judge is the loser not you or your horse. Especially when you know you did the best you could..

Thanks for all the response, My trainer had taken me aside tonight, she told me I did make some mistakes and it was a large class. How ever the very first show I did very well and some people work very hard for years just to get what I had gotten the first time out. She had also given me a list of things to work on for the next show. She breeds and trains olenburgs. When she showed her young guy named oscar (he is 7) she did not win any thing neither and he is a big mover. She said she takes him for the experience and that he needs to grow up. She said a horse show is like a candy store not everyone likes everything so they pick what they like (referring to judges). I am not giving up on horse shows but I will learn to just walk away from the rude snobs

all very true comments!! i have short hanoverians ( i bred them myself- so know why they are short). i get such rude remarks from some people just because they aren't 17hh. as for judges- i have taken them to in hand shows, and at one show won their year class and then never placed at the next- against the same horses. go figure eh!! as long as they behave themselves i have achieved my goal- as they're only youngsters. as for the rude people- sometimes i give it back, other times i give them the cold shoulder. if i get ribbons who cares how tall they are??

April, I constantly see a perplexed look on people's faces when I suggest Standardbreds are great riding horses. Good for you to get your horse out there - show them what a great breed it is.
Re: prejudice, a few years back a neighbour's daughter took her big Quarter Horse into an English equitation class at the local fall fair. She didn't place, and at the end, the judge came to her and said she had no business putting a Q H in an English class. That horse knew his English gaits, had great head position, and looked gorgeous in the English tack. That incident was the last of several previous distasteful events that put me off shows for good. I'll stick to the trails.

I took my young Standardbred to his first show (my first in 20 years) and he did very well in the green classes. He wouldn't stand still in the halter classes, but I kind of expected that, so I just let him walk around to keep him relaxed. He was so busy looking at everything. We still placed 4th, and then took a 2nd in Eng. Equitation.
We had a good and positive expereince at this show and that's the main thing. So many people are breed prejudice, try showing a Standardbred. Many people still think they are only good at pacing around a track. Not so!!! I feel that the more I can get my guy out there to show off what they are capable of, the better.
Having fun is still the name of the game.
