I'm glad u shared this Cindy. I can imagine your mixed and frustrated and even probably scared feelings as you wonder what is going to happen to your horses. People often say a dog or a cat is like a part of the family and how sad we are when one of them dies. When you have spent the amount of time that you must with your horses it's so difficult. I spent between 2 and 8 hours most days at the barn and I only own 1 of them. I can not imagine not having that in my life. It is what gets me thru these crazy times that we are living in. But there are bills to be paid and keeping horses is no small financial output even when they are healthy.

When I was talking about the mustangs round-ups I am not trying to get people to take them or sponsor them or donate funds for them. I want people to write letters and make phone call in an attempt to keep them wild. It appears there is enough land to keep the horses out on the ranges. Rounding up the horses and keeping them in captivity is costing the taxpayers oodles of money. I am convinced there are better ways to go about this.
I wish you the very best with your new business ventures. People/families need this type of thing. There must be some young girls around that would love to help with chores in exhange for lessons or riding time?

The thing is I'm slower and less agile, so the work is harder to keep up with 6 horses. People around here don't seem to want to help out very much, everyone always has something else to do. I think it is a sign of the times so to speak. Yes, people want to ride horse, be around horses, but they don't want to take responsibility for them, which could be part of the reason why people aren't so involved in saving wild horses. I wonder if it was presented to them in a different way, some might like to financially support if they knew they were sponsoring a horse or a couple of horses as long as their only responsibility was financial and they didn't have to do anything else. There's a lot of work and money involved in looking after one horse let alone 6 or more. By sponsoring a horse people could say they have a horse or own a horse without even touching it or seeing it except in pictures. Sounds sick, but we live in a sick society, unfortunately our horses do too wild or not. Just some thoughts :)

I have been in semi retirement for several years now, but my husband retires from the saw mill in 6 years. Since the economic decline here in Canada I have had to enter the work force again because people have cut back on luxuries like Riding Camps for their kids, they are opting for holidays close to home that include the whole family. We are setting up our place to cater to familys so they can come go hiking, fishing, horsebackriding and x country skiing in the winter. It's slow going, we don't want to take out loans from the bank, this is going to be our retirement project. When my husband gets in the mood where he wants the horse's used or gone, I get feeling guilty about not using them. It is true I have too many for just me, but my daughter rides and she has plans to teach her child to ride as soon as baby can sit up. Her hubby likes horses and riding, plus there are kids in the neighbourhood that don't have horses and want to ride. Also, I have learned of underprivileged kids who would love to ride or be around horses but can't afford it. I'm thinking about Ride by Donation to those underpriviledged families, advertised through churches and community services organization.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zVSIDHTOc-g This is a great video about our wild horses with some advice about what we can do to help.
I have been amazed how few people will bother to write and send letters to help out our wild horses. It seems people are giving up before they ecen r you help?

Retire? What's that? I've got at least another 13 years before I can even consider it and even then I might not be able to afford to. I wish I could forget about trying to make a living, there are so many other things I could be spending my time on. Oh well.

some of the The horses in this world are so persecuted, hunted, killed, mamed, slaughtered, butchered, Cindy, just love yourself for having horses, feeding them, and quit worrying so much... they love you and all your impairments... they don't care.... that is the number one lesson of having horses... they are just happy to BE here...... chin up!!

Hello "Over 50" gang - just checking out all the commentary, and honestly, I can hardly wait till I retire! I took the last 8 months off, and it has been wonderful. Riding every day! Shame I have to go back into the workforce now, to fund the next 8 months of riding!

There's good news ahead for all of you over 50s - retirement is just around another corner. I used to hate coming home in the dark too. Now that I'm (sort of) retired, I can visit the horses and play anytime of the day. So hang in there. You'd be surprised how quickly the time goes when you have less than 10 years to go until retirement.

for what it;s worth-- my mum in ontario tells me she can tell her days are getting longer----- so mine must be getting shorter!! i refuse to believe it and told her i can't see any difference yet..... but i know it's bound to happen, then i'll be into the mud season myself. my big bug bear is getting home before dark from work. i hate to have to do the chores in the dark. it;s okay if it gets dark during, but if its dark when i start it ruins the evening. we don't have many indoor arenas here in new zealand, so we are lucky if we have lights to ride under in our lucky outdoor arenas. mine still gets quite wet and i won't ride on it with puddles there. but as i have babies if they have 6 weeks off for a wet rest i don't mind. cheers
