Horses give us the wings we need to fly..... so let's soar!

Free. That's how I feel everytime I ride 'my'  horse indoors and outdoors. Empowered. I think we all feel Empowered when we sit upon the back of a nine-hundred pound animal and ride. How could we not feel this way? Great kings, emperors, leaders and generals and even traitors rode today's horse.

Alexander the Great had Bucephalus. Genghis Khan was believed to have a stunning Akhal-teke. George Washington rode Nelson,  a horse who carried him through Valley Forge and Yorktown.…

Debbie's Horse Gets to Try a Different Saddle

Debbie, my wonderful riding teacher and manager of a big stable (38 horses or so) has a dream of doing long distance riding.  She has her horse, Tercel, an Arabian gelding, but since he is an Arab it can be difficult to find a saddle that FITS him.  If you are going to ride a horse long distances, a well fitting saddle is essential if you want a sound, usable horse at the end of the ride.  She already bought one saddle that ended up not really fitting Debbie or Tercel, and…

Being Grateful for Things You Don’t Like.

My favorite training mentor had a habit that drove me nuts. She would be working with a horse who spooked or flipped his head or had some other issue that made him a disaster and when she climbed on, if you were close, you could hear her say in a low…

Creating Balance Between Liberty and Ridden Work

Can you ride the same horse that you play with at liberty?  Is riding going to damage the partnership?  How can you combine the two styles and how do you introduce them?

Extra is my liberty horse and she gallops around me with her red mane whipping and tail like a ball of fire chasing her down the field.  She prances up to me snorting and blowing.  Everything about…

A Holistic Approach to Anxiety in Horses

So often in my work as an equine sports therapist I see and hear about horses struggling with anxiety. Abuse -When do you speak up?

Do you ever get haunted by a situation where you wish you had said something? Mine was 18 months ago. As I drove away from a lesson, I pulled over to check my messages, facing a riding arena where a roping event was going on. It was a perfect summer night and riders were warming up. There was some light bantering passed around, followed by good-natured…

Dead jockey Sign for New Life?

Frank Hayes, born 1883 died 1923 due to a heart attack he had on June fourth.  He rode a lovely mare named Sweet Kiss(later renamed)  in a race in Belmont Park in New York. So that lasted long... and How to Restore an Oilskin!

"Oh yeah! I'm totally going to get into blogging on Barnmice!" Over 5 months later I have 2 blog posts to show for it. I will get back on the horse, and this time I won't get off it. Let's just pretend like that hiatus never happened, okay?

Last weekend I was very fortunate to be given a full length oilskin duster. The catch? It was covered in mold. I'm not talking like a little spotting, I'm talking old-leather-halter-left-in-a-barn-for-50-years moldy. When I texted…
