Maggie in the mud...

Okay, not mud, actually, just wet sand.  Muffin was a bit of a saucy thing in our lesson on Wednesday (by that I mean she had moments where you feel like you are sitting on a barrel of TNT, match at the ready), so my trainer won't make a decision on our show hopes until next lesson.  In her defence, Maggie was in season, and this late in the year, she is INSISTENT in her cycle.  So, it looked like the next couple days were going to be wet, so my instructions were to ride her outside, in the…

I Say GOOD BOY Many More Times Today

I must confess that I approached my ride on Bobby today with sort of a hopeless feeling.  So I spent the grooming time giving his head a good scratching, hoping that if I made him feel good he might be more cooperative.  Bobby is always such a good boy during grooming and tacking up, he puts up with the indignity of the spray bottle, and he is very good during tacking up.  Shannon has him trained so she can tighten the girth without having to hold the reins at all, and Bobby…

Safety around the farm!

Hey guys,

Hope everyone is enjoying the start to the long weekend, and have enjoyed watching the spectacular performances by the Canadians today at the London 2012 Olympic Games. Canada won their first gold medal of this Olympic Games, as well as a silver and a bronze medal; go Canada go! For all the riders competing at Grandview Summer Horse Trials tomorrow, best of luck! Make sure you bring your rain boots and rain gear because the weather is unfortunately not looking too…

August 2012

Wednesday Aug 1 2012

I've been going up after work every night to cold hose Cooper. Last night I didn't say anything to him and just walked past his stall, I thought I was being quiet but his head popped up from eating and he came over to the door and squeezed his face against the screen. Guess he could hear my bones creaking LOL

The hematoma is not getting any bigger now, looks like it has gone down a bit. I put poultice on it Tuesday and Wednesday after drying him and then…

Do you have SUL for the horses?

Unconditional Love

E. A. Buck 2012

Unconditional: not subject to conditions; complete.

Sympathetic: having the capacity of being simultaneously affected with the same feeling as another.

Love: an intense feeling of deep affection or fondness for.

In Sanskrit the word for a deeper compassion is karuna.   Karuna is actually our ability to relate to another in so intense a measure that the plight of the other affects us as much as…

Dog Agility and Horse Agility

I can’t remember who came first in my life- dogs or horses. I do know a few of each are required for my mental health. There is a slow and gradual changing of the guard, as years go on.

Three dogs and 13 years ago, my cattle dog, Hero and I were pretty depressed after losing our old dog, Spam. The moping around was wearing on us, so we signed up for Dog Agility class and called it date night.

I’d been to obedience classes with other dogs- but this was different. It was happy…

The Oakley Diaries - 9: "Reculez pour Mieux Sauter"

Oakley had a light July.

We aren't going anywhere for August, and probably not in Septermber, either.

We are going to concentrate on basic dressage work and  jumping skills over low jumps.

First, because he got kicked good and hard by a mare who wears…

Did 3-Day Eventing Cross-Country Runs Ruin Bobby?

I got to ride three times this week.

Mia was an angel, since Debbie had a cantering lesson in the main ring I rode in the other ring with two girls exercising their horses.  Mia was so good, she stayed at the walk each and every time the horses galloped (yes, gallop, not a canter) past her, she did not flinch when the horses were galloping towards her.  Her whole attitude was--“I’m in my thirties, I don’t need to run around any more!”   I was sort of limited with…

The Olympics are here!!

Hey bloggers,

This week is an exciting week because it is the start of the 2012 London Olympic Games. This is the third time London has hosted the Olympic Games and what an amazing place to have the Olympics, especially for all the equine events. A fun fact--> Did you know that equestrian sports made its summer olympics debut in Paris, France at the 1900 Summer Olympics. Shortly after, the equestrian sports disappeared until 1912 but has appeared at every Summer Olympic Games…

Blurring the Line Between Predator and Prey.

One of the first things to know about horses is that they are prey animals. Simply put, that means that other animals eat them, and their natural instinct and only defense is to flee. Prey animals usually have wide set eyes as an early defense system.

Humans are predators, like mountain lions and wolves. Our…

Six tonnes of horse manure per day!!

My British Dressage magazine arrived just in time to give me some essential info on what is involved at London's Greenwich Park during the Equestrian events.  Here are some fascinating figures:

6 tonnes of horse manure per day is anticipated.

10,000 tonnes of arena surface, including warm up arenas and walk ways have been laid down on top of wooden decking that is placed on a steel frame supported by thousands of height-adjustable steel legs to allow for the undulating…

Turnout troubles

I have the opposite turnout problem that most have.  I have a beautiful 3 acre field that my 29 year old mare doesn't want to graze in.  She has been at my new home/barn since November and she just cannot get settled there.  She prefers to spend the days in her stall eating hay and will only graze intermittently and then is compelled to go back to the stall.  This mare has been on 24 hour turnout for at least the last 12 years of her life.  She lives with her companion of 4+ years a Shetland…
