taking care with baby

How much is too much? Some trainers suggest not working the young horse too much, or very often, especially if a warmblood, to prevent long-term injury. Other trainers believe that if you're not at level 5 or 6 by 6 years old, you aren't progressing fast enough. My trainer noticed yesterday that delph is bum high, so is still growing-as you would expect with only being 4. And she is so amiable, and training so well, that we are moving forward. If we stayed at the same level, she would be…

Stop losing your stirrup when you canter

Hi Julie,

I have constantly found that I am loosing the left stirrup when I canter. In various readings it suggests that I am collapsing on my left, hence loosing the stirrup. I tried to stretch my left side when cantering and found this was helpful. Can you give me any suggestions on how to work with this issue, perhaps exercises or things to do while riding that would help with this problem?

Thanks again, I enjoy your advice.

Nanc

Boris - The growing years

Introduction:

Boris, 3yr old tb x id

Recently moved from Padstow to Leedstown Cornwall.

Had a week at my new yard and today, mum and dad had the vet out. I thought it was just a check up, next minute, jabbed in the neck and vet wrestling with my teeth!! Wolf teeth needed taking out, as if I have spares!.

Had a great sleep after and then back out into our field of lush grass.

Perfect for a young man like me.

More updates when something…

Start Horse Jumping Safely

I never cease to be amazed about the 'S' word. A word that is so very powerful and very important in all areas of training. A word that allows accelerated progress and increased safety. The word of course is SIMPLICITY…..and contrary to what many say it is not that difficult to achieve, at least to a large extent. Just reject the…

Using Music in the training of horses.

I am having such a pleasure working with my horses and not too long ago I discovered the advantage of training my horses using music.

In between working with the new dressage exercises from Carolyn Resnicks blog. In-between theses exercises I…

Friends For Life

Many of us have been involved in horses for most of our lives and this has had an impact in our lives and who we become as a person. Even those who came onto the scene later in their life will be affected in ways unimagined when they first decided to pursue the equestrian dream of owning their own horse.

None of our journies are completely smooth and along the way we run into the whackos and nut jobs and wannabes, but even they have something to teach…

Natural Horsemanship Solutions: Stop Being Pushy!

Stop Being Pushy

Horses that are pushy can be very frustrating to be around. Pushiness can range from horses that seem to just persistently search for treats in your pockets, to horses that will actually bite you or seemingly walk through you like you are nothing.…

Difference Between Respect and Dominance with your Horse

In this article you will find a question from Dee in California about the difference between respect and dominance with your horse.

Dee writes:

To me, as a new horse owner, there is a fine line between gaining respect and being dominant. I really don’t understand the difference.…

Show success

Well, success is relative... Little Maggie was a very good girl. She doesn't look at much of anything, including the boats that were on the grounds. Little spook in the indoor arena. Low score of 49.6, high of 58.4, both on the same day, the last day of the show, go figure.

So, what have we learned? Balance needs to be better, on the part of the rider. Looks like we have to buckle down…

What is the difference between movements, figures and patterns?

Many people ask me about the choreography of their freestyle pattern.

One of the confusions surrounding a freestyle pattern is what is

allowed and what is forbidden at a certain level. Before you can begin

to build a pattern you need to know the difference between movements

and figures so that you don't try something that is on the "forbidden"

list at your level.

What is the difference between movements, figures and patterns?

According to the USDF rule… Continue

Horse History - June 29th Through July 4th

Horse History - June 29th Through July 4th

June 30th, 1917 - The Thoroughbred racehorse Exterminator ran in his first race. The race was six furlongs, held at the Old Latonia Racecourse located in Covington, Kentucky, and Exterminator won it by three lengths. Exterminator was a gelding and during his career he would race 100 times, winning 50 of them. Perhaps most impressive of all is the fact that Exterminator would…

A Good Reason to Count to Ten

A year or so back I was searching the Web for unusual horsie sites and I ran into horsetrainingresources.com, run by Charlie Hicks. Though most of the stuff on this site is for the Western rider (reining emphasis) and is based on older American horse training, I signed up for his e-mails since I am willing to learn from any source.
I am VERY GLAD I did so.…

A PROD UCT OF IGNORANCE says William Micklem

Last week I mentioned about the possible use of electric cattle prods on horses in USA rodeo shows. Over the next two days an extraordinary 27 people e-mailed to assure me that this practise no longer took place. I was heartened but not convinced. Then Barnmice received an e-mail from the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) with an official statement entitled PRCA Livestock Welfare Statement – Electric Cattle Prod:

“PRCA rules allow for the use of a livestock prod as…
