FEI Winners Announced!

FEI WINNERS ANNOUNCED:

At a glittering ceremony in Copenhagen on 19 November, five heroes of the equestrian world became the first recipients of the new FEI Awards.

Best Rider

Show jumper Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum of Germany received the Best Rider accolade.

“It’s a great honour for me to win this award, particularly as it’s the first time it’s been awarded. It’s an accomplishment every rider would consider very important, and it’s so nice to… Continue

Thomas Ritter: Work Space

Work Space

©Thomas Ritter 2009

I want to say a couple of things about the proper work space for the training of a dressage horse. It is very important that the arena footing has the right consistency, neither too deep, nor too hard. Footing that is too deep can easily lead to suspensory ligament and other soft tissue injuries. Excessively hard footing will eventually contribute… Continue

The Classical Philipe Karl

Pursuit of a harmonious relationship with the horse has led me to many philosophies and instructors. I've always known that the horse is an extremely sensitive creature and despite his ability to physically overpower any human, has submitted to a role of servitude.

I have been fortunate to be inspired by the insight and analysis of some very influential people. Principally, Tony Gonzales, who taught me to observe and analyze the foundation of motion....the feet. Sally Swift whose brilliant… Continue

The Many 'Faces' Of My Horse...

It was love from the moment that I met my horse... I was completely smitten with my handsome boy. Over the past few months we have gotten to know one another, and I have come to realise that my equine friend has many 'faces'.

The Master Manipulator: He knows how to make his immense cuteness work for him when he wants something (like yummies or a neck scratch). It is the face that won me over when we met... and I think that he actually is able to crank up the cute factor by making doe… Continue

I'm All In

OK, I hear you. Color me persuaded, if not convinced. The chance at riding in a Debbie McDonald clinic is one that should not be passed up. So I just went to the California Dressage Society website and handed over $65 for my 2010 membership dues.

The CDS regional amateur clinics are an interesting phenomenon. I don't know if other… Continue

Are Horses Bold?

Are horses bold? What is the difference between bold and bolt? I think my horses, when frightened, bolt with boldness.

When I picture a bold horse a cross country eventing horse comes to mind. They bound over huge jumps and gallop off. How did they become bold?

What bold horses do you know? What makes them… Continue

Manna From Heaven

Manna is defined as (among other things) any sudden or unexpected help, advantage, or aid to success, because as biblical scholars will attest, manna was the food miraculously supplied to the Israelites in the wilderness during their flight from Egypt.

It wasn't long after Sammie and I fled Clancy's backyard to the upscale boarding facility that I was blessed with my own manna from Heaven. Just two weeks after we moved in, our trainer Meg asked me to reschedule our usual Saturday… Continue

Movin' On Up

Dressage competitions are comprised of a series of levels, and tests within each level increase in complexity. The "official" starting level (in the U.S.) is Training Level, though there is an "unofficial" Introductory Level for those who want to get their feet wet with a simpler test, without cantering. After Training Level comes First Level, and this is the earliest stage at which you can qualify to perform Musical Freestyle. Let me get one thing clear: I have no illusions about my abilities,… Continue

Not quite the start I planned to my blogging life but ...

I'd intended to use my Barnmice blog to record elements of my my equestrian journey that I thought might interest, inform or 'delight' others.

Real life etc seems to be blocking much of equestrian my journey currently. So in the interests of taking a small step to start my blogging life, let me share with you a link to an article that seems to be causing an international stir in the cyber dressage community.…

Dressage Two-Step

Dressage is often compared to dancing with your horse. I soon learned that with a young horse, the choreography involves two steps forward, and one step back, if you're very lucky.

My dance with Sammie had us tripping over our feet a bit at first, but we soon established a rhythm. As I mentioned at the end of my last post, once I adopted a more confidant attitude (even if I had to fake it), we started making progress. Lisa was very happy with my improved longeing skills, and… Continue

Ups and downs

I didn’t win! So I left the BHS Young Instructor of the Year final quite disappointed. Having said that, it was a great experience and I did learn a lot, so overall I am pleased that I entered. It was good to meet other people of my own age, following similar paths and also the judges who were all Fellows of the BHS. It is a fabulous opportunity to take part in such a competition and I will be going back next year for another try.

Last Saturday I visited Oldencraig EC in Surrey to… Continue

Lessons From Sam by Robert Pruitt

He had been sold a few times before. An old Quarter Horse named Sam. He was respectful but knew who he was and wasn't impressed with anyone, anymore. I could put a halter on him; tie the lead rope in a circle and any small child could control him like he had the best custom bridle and reins. Sam would never take one false step with a child on his back, or a quick step or any step that might frighten a child. Twenty years old, Sam was a big stocky and still powerful old style… Continue

looking for a cross.

hello everyone,

my name is jay and i'm looking for a horse to spend the next few years with while i get back into horses. i am debating weather going to buy a yearling or go to a breeder looking for a certin horse. Last year i went to the equine affaire and met a beautiful horse that was a standardbred/draft cross. i've never drooled or wanted a horse like him as bad as i did, and i thought maybe i'd get over it when i got home. But now i'm looking to buy a horse to work with…

Paige Presents: This Week in Horse History - September 21st through 26th

September 21, 2002 – For the first time ever, the United States driving team won the Silver Medal at the Four-In-Hand Driving World Championship. Previously the best finish for the United States team in the event had been fourth. In 2002, though, the United States placed second, with the Netherlands coming in first and Germany coming in third. New Horse, First Show

My boyfriend and I took my horse to a Canadian Horse show... our first show together. I was a little worried about how each of us would handle the event, but I am thrilled that the little lad was stellar and his humans had a great time. By day 3 he was getting a little stir crazy, since at home he is never in a stall, but with lots of walking and exploring, he settled down... and he was wonderful in the show ring. We even came home with some pretty "souvenirs". :)

We would like to… Continue
