I had a very nervous 10 year old girl taking lessons on my "babysitter" gelding. I told her to sing a bit to "help Dorje' feel relaxed". She started singing "Iron Man" by Black Sabbath!! Dorje' looked a bit concerned, I started her talking instead - how did SHE know that song? (this was 3 years ago, not 30!), said her Dad played it constantly. Too funny.
Hi - I also take my i-pod and listen to it while a ride. I swear he must hear it too as his ears twitch back and forth. I find the music takes your mind of being nervous, which settles and calms you down, which transfers onto the horse.
I love the idea of singing a song.I often count beats to our rhythm...1,2, 1,2, 1,2 etc. I don't get nervous too much anymore...I know my horse now and how he thinks. I 'm ready for when he is a big fraid-cat moods when he wants to bolt to save us from the scary unknown thing that is outside the bay door (silly horse). I was sour last year jumping, now we are jumping everything! Just enjoy your horse, and the fear fades away. If you don't feel good about doing an exercise (nervous) then baby steps. I am a big believer in having a more experienced rider ride your horse to show you he/she can do it...then you feel a bit more confident. Big breath, smile cus you love your po, and go have fun!!!
Hi Helen, I hear you about the "nervous attacks". I try to minimize them when they appear. It's just our sensuous telling us we are out of our comfort zone. I try to analyze why I feel the fear at that moment and calm down the edgy little fears.
Good for you Helen. I tried riding at 47 and I am still riding. I enjoy it. Somebody once told me that when I get nervous, to hum a favourite song, even if it is in your head. So doing those scary moments, try humming or singing. It might help you to relax as well as your horse. He might actually like being serenaded. When I hum, my horse's ears are a pair of antennas, going back and forth, back and forth, trying to figure out what I am saying.
Hello All! I am a 48 year-old (nervous) rider in Montreal, Quebec. I took up riding at the age of 42 and it has been a very slow learning process. The first couple of years were spent getting over my fear of horses. Now, I am completely comfortable with them - on the ground - but I still get my "nervous attacks" while riding ... but I keep trying every chance I get.
Yesterday was a perfect day in Southern Ontario for my first ride in the open fields. The snow and ice had melted enough to make it slushy but the ground still hard, with safe footing. It got him use to going through water again. My boy enjoyed it so much. As I was tacking up, it was like he knew we were getting away together. Didn't even flinch at the 4 wheelers going by on the road. Two hours flew by. That was awesome!
