Hi Just jioned this group as well as the driving group . Looking forward to getting some snow so I can resume winter riding My friend has two Icelandics that are an absolute blast to ride in the winter. We have not had a good ride in a month because we have no snow cover and the groung is just to hard. A human being can only ride so many circles and serpentines in the arena before they start to go crazy. I need to go for an Icey ride. Anne

Happy New Year everyone - went shopping this morning, longlined my stallion in the afternoon and beat my boys at monopoly this evening.
Here is a link to a video of pics longlining my 3 yr old stallion - this is the first time I have taught a horse to long line and he is doing so well - this is the forth time he has done it.

So, those of you that do not ride over the winter... how do you "tune up" your horses before spring riding? This may be a stupid question, but I just recently got my first horse. Looking for any & all advice!
I haven't had a chance to ride since mid November. We get horrible winds here and I don't dare ride in those on a good warm day. This season we have had more horrible wind chill days than not.

I too stop riding at -10. Our horses have no winter coats, as they live under lights, so -10 is not only really uncomfortable for me!
Fortunately we don't have much of that, and our horses are outside for 10 hours per day in 5 acre paddocks (we get almost no ice, but lots of snow), so a few days lay-off here and there doesn't cause much in the way of problems. They come back to work refreshed and eager, and I think that's a bonus. In the late fall when the cold hits I get the Christmas prep done, and when it happens again in late winter I do my income tax prep. That usually works out nicely, as if the riding weather stayed wonderful I'd never get either chore done.
I prefer to ride in heat, and intense heat is, for me, less uncomfortable than cold!

Yes, we had a lot of ice too, and I was glad to see most of it melt on Christmas and Boxing Day. It's better footing now, with a bit of fresh snow. I just want a few more inches of snow, then I can get out and take my mare for a ride. No indoor at home, so I am praying for good footing so I can keep her semi-fit just hacking.....Today warmed up nicely, thank goodness! Warm enough to be manageable, not warm enough for thaw and resulting ice. Yay!

you are right gail - we sure have ice - I have had to dump a couple manure loads in the corral just so they can walk around.
