I just learned that the Onaqui Herd, (located 40 miles SW of Salt Lake), has been rounded up. This herd has 43,880 acres of land and the BLM estimates that it can easily maintain a population of 199-210 horses. I have learned that they are only going to return 30 horses. I visited this herd last summer and was profoundly touched touched by them. I based a series of paintings, "Among the Mustangs", on this experience. It is due to exhibit Nov 7-8. Please pass this news along, I want to see the herd numbers returned to the capacity the land can handle. I also would like to know if anyone has any other information on the status of this herd.

thanks Elandra, Ive forumlated a plan with my niece who is the chief pony club instructor (and a research scientist during the week) Im going to ride him for 15 - 20 mins ever second day and see how he goes, she suggested that one of her pc students might be interested in taking him for a few weeks and I'll spell her horse here for that time over christmas. I agree though that theres not point in keeping an animal that your are weiry of no matter how much you love them. I want to enjoy riding again not be wonndering whats going to happen next all the time if I try to push him.

Hi Catherine, I would have a reputable trainer ride him and see what they think. I know it is very hard to find one here hope it is better there. You can build your confidence back but you have to feel safe with the horse first. I have recently had to give up on one that kept bucking. Now I have a lovely gelding I am enjoying very much. I found a wonderful home for the bucking mare was completely honest with the new owner she is younger and willing to deal with that. Good luck, Elandra

had a ride on my old boy yesterday have to say Im reluctant to push him incase he decided to let one drop. havent riden him a lot in the last 12mths and I feel Ive lost a lot of confidence in him since Ive been thrown a couple of times.

wondering what the best thing to do is. should I see if I can get someone to get him going again for me and have a few lessons with them ????

or should I consider getting someone to get him back into work and sell him and buy another that I can establish confident relationship with. ????

There are also rescue horses.We've placed horses that were no longer able to compete at the highest level,but were great for someone looking for reliable pleasure horses that they could show at lowere levels.There are also some great standarbreds out there who with some work can be great riding horses.My mare was off the track and in absolute sweetheart

On the buying a new horse for the first time after only 2 years of leasing.. 10K is NOT allot of money for a good horse that is SAFE, TRAINED, WILL VET, and NOT TOO OLD, AND CAN GO TO SHOWS AND take care of you and help you win sometimes. NOT in the hunter jumper world. In fact, that is cheap. You should trust your trainer, and if you don't, you should go elsewhere. She knows what you need more than people on an internet share site. One CAN get horses for less..but no one will sell a nice horse for less than that that will vet and is trained at all over fences.
