I'm a big fan of Standardbreds as riding horses - one of the horse world's best kept secrets. Glad to hear you have your priorities straight! I'm 63 now and I believe you just keep going until you can't go any more or it stops being fun.

I turned 60 this year & hope to continue to ride for a loooong time. I lost my left arm in '99 & that made me even more determined to prioritize my passion! I have a Standardbred that I adopted from Greener Pastures in 2007 & a retired TB.

Yup, that was Jack. I didn't know him well, but the last time I rode with him in that group, I quit after 3 hours because I was pooped and he said how sorry he was I couldn't continue, then went off for another 2 hours on his horse. What a character!

Hey Linda, the man that you said dropped dead after a nice ride and groomed his horse then dropped dead...are you talking about Jack Mc. ?? Small world isn't it

Eileen is dead right, Carol. Don't give up. You don't want to be 65 and thinking Why did I give up riding? My 76 yr old friend has been having problems with her young mare who finally bucked her off. She took 3 weeks to recover, but is now selling the mare (great horse for someone else) and looking for a quiet older horse to ride.
The day will come when we all have to give up riding, but don't offer to give it up before that day comes. I knew an old fellow in this area who needed 2 people to get him on his horse, but he rode regularly with a saddle club that only does walking trail rides. After a typically long ride (3, 4 hours), he untacked his horse, groomed him, and then dropped dead. That's the way I want to go. Unfortunately, if I'm going to die because of riding, it'll likely be coming off a horse trying to take a jump I can't handle - still a good way to go, in my opinion.

Ouch! that sounds painful Carol. Well at least you will know better next time about getting up ona 2 year old. I was hurt badly in my mid 50s horse went over backwards on me. I was luck that nothing was broken, but I could not walk with out the use of a shovel first...was on a camping trip so had to improvise for a while. Anyway needless to say I could not ride at all for the duration of the trip. Got home and still could not walk very well. However that did not stop me from getting up on my one appy just to see if I could get on and sit there...I could so I put him away and went shopping for a new horse. I found the right horse, a month later, and got on him and rode him around a bit...I still was pretty sore. It was actually about a year before I could walk normal. But the reason I am telling you this, is to let you know, even though we do not bounce like we used to, we just have to get the horse that we can trust and that would probably not be a 2 year old. Get out there girl...start out slow, just for 5 minutes if that is all you can handle, but keep at it. Pretty soon you will be telling us all about the great ride you had. Don't give up yet

Well that 2 year old in the picture is mine and my boarder bought one at the same time..I sent mine out for 60 days training a few months ago. While she was gone my boarder convinced me to get on her 2 year old while she rode another horse. Her horse did a little buck and in an effort to stay on I got the saddle horne in the belly, bruised my boob, bruised my thigh and pulled the muscles in my chest. How dumb is that. That was in March. I would have been better to eat dirt I think. So I have let my daughter ride my Gabby while I watch. We just don't bounce like we used to. I really enjoyed having the babies around but now their all grown up and Gabby is a long way off the ground...maybe this fall??

I agree, Carol. Get out there and get'er done! You will find all kinds of new friends!

My goodness Carol, you need a rding buddy to get you in that saddle and ouot on the trail. You are in one of the best places for riding, If you have some riding friends or friends that are in the same situation...give them a call make one day a week, your trail time. Ride out from the farm, or trailer the horses to the Ganni or a friends farm and ride out from there...get out there and Get'er done.

Hi All,
Just kinda lost my desire to ride eventhough I have the farm and a couple of animals to ride. Guess I just don't bounce so good and hate the achy muscles when I do ride
