well a successful a & p with the little licker! when i do inhand is when he turns into a biter - usually. but not today. the only problem with today was that it starter to shower hard, and he didn't want to play anymore (and he was the only 3 yr old to play up of course). so he blew his 'suitability for dressage' class. but he won the suitability for show hack' class. and got a 3rd in his age class and the big, best registered sport horse any age. and the classes were quite big too. so he's a good little fellow.

finally-- someone who knows what its' like jan!!! thanks for your reply! he just had a bath to get ready to go to the a &p show (in hand) and tried to bend in 2 to lick the water off himself! he doesn't seem to care who he licks!

HI, ladies!

I've had "lickers" before, and currently have one.  Her mother would stand for the farrier and the vet and lick her handlers arms from wrist to shoulder for as long as whatever procedure we were doing took.  This youngster is the same, and my Dutch gelding was similar.  There was never any interest in biting, just a great deal of licking.  As it turns out, I'm allergic to equine saliva, so I end up with hives all up and down my arms from these horses.  They are all on free choice salt blocks, a super vitamin/mineral mix, etc., and their CBC's are quite normal.  They're just affectionate and relaxed horses!

i haven't had a blood test done. but he gets iodised salt with every feed, plus a salt lick plus rock salt ad lib in his stall (stabled at night), he gets magnesium, selenium once a week (soils are deficient here in nz), and a vitamin mineral mix 4x a week. so i don't think he's wanting......

That is awesome Vicky :-) He sounds like a keeper, just be watchful about the licking as long as he doesn't get too much credit for it he should out grow the habit. Have you concidered his mineral balance? Just a thought.:-)

i just live in hope. some days he's good, some days he's worse. no rhyme or reason to his licking. he's just a wierd little guy. who is very sweet to work with on the ground, and ... touch wood, has not even dreamed of putting me off yet in the 20 or so times ive ridden him. he canters on voice command even. what a sweetie. (except for the licking)

First off I'm not a pro or do I claim to have professional sounding answers. That being said you have my permission to laugh at my method. At around 6 months to 1 year foals get the urge to taste everything in their world including people. I keep a shooter of binaca breath spray on me for just that occasion. As soon as that mouth comes at me they get a big shot of binaca right in the mouth. Once they decide people taste nasty they quit. ( I did have one filly who loved it. I had to change to hot cinnamon flavor just for her. )

We do the same here.  Their ears are furry and their noses  full of whiskers, but at least the bugs don't get to them as readily.

I don't clip whiskers anymore. My horses are on pasture full time and need their whiskers for what the Creator intended them for.  If we show they come off but that isn't very often and always the local schooling shows for the kids that want to learn.
