What is Performance Horse Development?

Like figure skating performance horse sports are made up of many different events that require specific skills. The successful completion of these specific skills requires a solid basic skill foundation. Remember that old adage…don’t run before you walk? Competitors need to master basic skills. Unlike figure skating there were no competitions for performance horses based on those basics. If you wanted to participate in performance horse events you had to have a complete skill set. And what… Continue

What is a PHD V show

A virtual Show is an IPHDA competition held online

How can PHD Events be judged fairly off of the internet with Exhibitors from many different locations?

An IPHDA judge is required to Evaluate whether a horse willingly followed the rider’s guiding and transition cues. They are not required to Judge how willing or unwillingly the horse reacted to the rider’s cues.

IPHDA Judges use their expertise as successful horse trainers to give each exhibitor a score based on… Continue

Malachi

Hi all,

Just a quick update on my baby!

We are doing super well together at the moment. We have overcome the majority of his fears and he now trusts me! He is still a very willing, big hearted boy!!

So far we have done all the basics like picking up feet, learning to walk on a leadrope, stable and field manners etc, all of which we did slowly and without any shouting or bullying.

I decided that as he is going to be 2 in April we should take the next step.… Continue

Beat the February Horse Blahs

Winters in Canada can be very long and arduous for the horse owner. If you don't have a riding arena the snow and the cold can really limit the quality and quantity of your rides. Don't get me wrong I love riding on those nice sunny winter days with a fresh powder on the ground but those days are far and few between here in southern Ontario. Most days we are dealing with deep snow, icy conditions, very cold weather or just a very bleak cloudy day.

I'll stop there before I… Continue

Continue

Reward for info leading to the identification of the person(s) responsible for the abuse of Beau Jingles

We have a flyer available - please feel free to post it on other forums, or e mail to those you think might be interested.

When Beau was taken to Sunkissed Acres Rescue and Retirement, he was less than a one on the Henneke scale. He was four years old, and so starving, and so weak, he ate gravel if you did not hold up hay to him. Please help us identify who was responsible for Beau's deplorable condition, so that he did not suffer in vain.…

The dilemma af String Halt

Two years ago I purchased a horse, my Oldenburg dressage horse, who is an upper level horse that has never done competition. He was a project for my trainer, who took him as payment for training another horse to Grand Prix. Stonee was diagnosed as having String halt, a knee jerk reaction in the hind legs when the patella catches on a ligament and it causes a jerking,… Continue

Saddle Fit and Rider Position

Here is a question from one of my saddle fitting colleagues that represents a problem some of you may have experienced:

She wrote:

When I have the saddle on the horse, the tree fits, the panels are leveled (flair), the rider is sitting on both his seat bones, the rider is sitting in balance, so statically everything looks ok.

And then the horse start moving. The saddle does what is has to do, it stays in place and at this moment I am satisfied what I see, how the saddle is…

Full body workout- for the horse (film included)

Why waste money on expensive training aids when all you need is a headcollar, a lungerope, a bunch of friends and about 60 cm powder snow ;)

It’s cold here now, big surprise! It’s cold in Norway! Haha well, it’s cold!! We’ve had temperatures between -7 and -25 C every day since Christmas. And even colder some days, and at night. We try to make the most of it but I have to admit that the horses have had a few too many days off this past month.

Today the temperature was… Continue

This Week in Horse History - February 1st Through February 7th

This Week in Horse History - February 1st Through February 7th

February 2nd, 1997
– A life-size bronze statue of the Thoroughbred racehorse Cigar was unveiled at Florida's Gulfstream Park. The bay stallion raced in 1993 as a three-year-old and continued to race through 1996 as a six-year-old. He was declared Horse of the Year in both 1995 and 1996, and won the inaugural running of the Dubai Cup in 1996. He now lives at Kentucky Horse Park. Cigar retired as the leading North…

Staying Connected

As dressage riders, we strive constantly to keep our horses "connected" - that is, working "on the bit." A truly connected horse has a relaxed back, with power that comes from behind, moves over the back, and gets recycled back to the hind legs. When a horse is truly connected, riding is pure joy.

This is, of course, a state of being that takes correct training of both horse and… Continue

Inspiration From Long Ago

When I finally got diagnosed with MS back in 1993 I sort of went through an existential crisis about my riding ability. I was SOOOO weak, unsteady and uncoordinated that I despaired of ever being able to start riding again, much less being a good rider. After a few days I finally remembered a tale I had read back in 1970 in the book "Riding Reflections" by Piero Santini (1933), Caprilli's fellow cavalry officer and student, and this story showed me a way forward.

In…

The Rebirth of a Rider

For many years I never did what other people did. Whenever I was in barns people always came to watch me ride, I still haven't figured out why - maybe it was because I never fought with my horses. All my life I have ridden thoroughbreds off the racetrack, most of whom nobody else would take on as they were labelled "wild and crazy". Those wild and crazy horses taught me so much. I learned at a young age to listen to what the horse was trying to tell me - common sense. As a young girl I was… Continue

RADAR Update!

This is the latest update on how Radar is doing. Thank you to all who emailed their concern and positive thoughts! We are VERY appreciative of the contributions toward his vet bill and hope to have it paid soon!!!!

We were worried through the night as we got more rain. I had put a light blanket on Radar but it seemed to bother him quite a bit. He was grouchy because he wasn't feeling well and because his vision is compromised, I guess he wasn't sure what the blanket was? He kept… Continue

Breathing: A Lesson on the 1st Step to Effective Movement

As riders we get all sorts of information about how to have correct posture, how to breathe, and how to use our abdominal muscles. All of these things affect the way we stand, sit, move, and breathe. They even affect the way we think and our emotions. As babies we knew how to breathe naturally and use our breath for power. We filled our lungs, letting our belly expand, and screamed! When we breathe naturally our lungs fill as our diaphragm lowers and flattens out, and, because our stomach,… Continue

About Witsend Farms

Ann and Anthony Turner, who own Witsend Farms in Abbotsford, are the most knowledgeable people I have met since getting into riding a few years ago. They have been very caring and understanding and did everything they could to help my first horse Bond before he passed away in October. Within a few minutes of first seeing my horse they showed special care and understanding for him, detailing the injuries he had suffered earlier in his life from previous owners. Until then nobody actually said… Continue
