“Tummy out, tummy out,” I heard in lesson after lesson when I rode in Germany at Etoile International Equestrian Academy under the direction of Stephan Kiesewetter, chief trainer. Tummy out? I’d never heard such a direction from a dressage instructor, yet when I did it, I felt my lower back fill out and hip joints relax, the mobility of my lumbar spine increased while my upper torso stabilized, and I sat deeper. I found it easier to follow each big, bouncy stride—in fact, my horse gave bigger,…

No tall tale
Deforest enews
Waiting patiently in the barn before the historic event Tuesday morning, big “Jake” was standing quietly covered in a green blanket, calm and collected despite the palpable buzz around him, like a veteran prizefighter before a heavyweight title bout.
And make no doubt about it, big Jake is a heavyweight.
Valicia Denson’s Smokey Hollow Farm in Dekorra was the site for the much-anticipated match-up between Jake, a nine-year-old Belgian…

We're finally home! After a long four day weekend my mom, Chance, and I all made it back safely. We had a fabulous weekend! Chance was so well behaved and he acted like a total pro. Unfortunately Teri couldn't make it over to California but another Arizona
horse trainer, Kim Yacabucci, was able to help warm me up on Friday and Saturday. Here's all the details!
We…

... those were the first words in a message from our barn owner... so what do I do?
That's right, I panic.
My boyfriend and I drop everything and we race to the barn. We arrive at the barn to find The Squirt looking quite unconcerned.
The Squirt:
"Munch munch. Do I really have to come in? Can't you see that I'm eating?"
*head disappears into bale*
"Munch munch."
*Wanders to other side of bale as 'Mom' approaches*
"Munch munch. I don't…

Paco is the first horse all participants meet when they first start our program because of his wonderful personality. He is a Quarter Horse, Dun in color (some call him Buckskin) and 15hh. He is 20 years old. He has done it all in his life from cows to barrels and everything in between. While he will accommodate our riders who prefer English equitation, he is a cowboy horse through and through. He is a dream in the saddle who neck reins better…

How many times have you been driving down the road with the radio on when you've heard one of your favorite songs and thought, 'That would make a great
dressage freestyle'? Or, how many videos have you seen of darling children on sweet ponies, in costume, riding a fun test to a catchy tune? I know I have done both, but then when you watch the extremely complex and polished Kurs…

Hi!
Here are some pictures of me and a pony called Pepsi. She is owned by the riding school but I get to ride her a lot for free. We took a short ride in the snow and it was really nice even though she was very spirited.…

It FINALLY got warmer this week!
Wednesday morning it still was in the upper 20's F, and when I took my lesson at 1:00 PM the ring was just starting to thaw out. I figured it would barely be warm enough to use the bit (mullen mouth snaffle), though Mia was not too sure about that! I changed back to my jumping saddle because riding in my…

The better your horse behaves for your farrier, the better job your farrier can do.
Let's face it. No one wants to have to pick out a hoof with a horse that is behaving badly. Neither does your farrier. It's hard enough to keep your own feet out of the way and not get stepped on on a good day, let alone trying to wrestle around…

I am so glad that Barbara got in touch with Special Horses, Inc. I have an account here but I thought it would be better to open a new one for the program rather than have a personal page.
I love what I see and will set up Special Horses, Inc too asap! I can't wait to meet the Barn mice community :)

This pony that I read won't stop rushing when she's behind, and won't stop pausing and pooping whenever she has to trot on or is in front. I've tried giving her taps behind and infront of the leg beforehand but it doesn't work, as well as putting on a firmer leg. Any advice anybody?????? I don't want to keep stopping others in my lesson by this stubborn pony! :) Please comment and give advice!

I have been giving a bunch of seat and leg position riding lessons lately, and we've discovered some interesting things about the correlation of the pelvis, lower leg, and losing your stirrups.
Does this ever happen to you?
Do you lose your stirrups in the sitting trot?
Does your horse slow down in the sitting trot or when you work without stirrups?
Does your knee come out over the front of the saddle when you’re in the sitting trot or canter?
Does…

I remember the occasion well. It was the Fourburrow Pony Club camp in Cornwall, in the south west of England. I was 12 and a typical thin gangly kid. As you can see in the photograph above I was six foot tall on stick legs and all curled up on a 14.2 pony....my brilliant mare Charlie's Aunt. So what did my coach do? She took away my irons and made me ride and jump all morning with no stirrup irons, just like so many coaches have done before…

There are different terms tossed around today in relation to gut health. Terms such as prebiotics, probiotics, and direct-fed-microbials are all used and sometimes cause confusion for horse people. The technical definitions are below.
Prebiotic – products that can't be digested by the animal but does promote the growth…
