I don't know why, but school just drags on and on! I'm so tired, and all I want to do is get down to the Stables to be around the horses. But nooooo. I have to sit on my laptop doing Enlgish. Who really cares if a character is 2D or 3D? Not me.
Only 20 hours until I can go see the ponies again. I know I sound desperate, but seriously, more than 2 weeks without horses, and I cannot stop talking about them!
If you're looking for riding advice, don't come to me. I'm not great, but I do…

This is a very new adventure for me…….blogging. I never was much good at keeping a diary or even a weather journal. But maybe when there is a horse involved, I might do better. We’ll see how this goes.
I should start by introducing myself. You can call me Wendy but I’m also known around the barn as “CR” which stands for cockroach and that’s a long story. I might share it some day. I’ve been an avid horse person for 45+ years. Am I dating myself? I have Appaloosa horses……..whoa, wait a…

Bask N Coins+/ just racked up another award for the 2009 distance season. As members of the Arabian Horse Assciation of Eastern Canada (AHAEC) we qualify for their Year End High Point Awards. Well, Loosi has been named the Champion High Point Half-Arabian CTR/END horse. I pick up the trophy on Jan 23/10 at the AGM.
We did get turfed out of the AERC Regional Standing for North East Middleweight Division. I knew it was too good to last when our season ended 6 weeks before the close of…

So I've been working with this Quarter Horse gelding that came into the
Western Riding school where I work a couple of months ago. He's a nice horse just hasn't had any real training. So for the last sixty days we have been working a lot on flexion, bend, moving forward, moving off my leg, just getting him more broke in the face etc.
So I just had to share this because…

It looks stunning doesn't it. And yet, it is also killing my livelihood.
My private clients decided to give up the struggle trying to keep up with lessons & training and are basically just keeping horses ticking over. Even if I did get to…

I appoligize for not posting for awhile, been crazy busy. First of all, yes I got the job. I get all my chores done from 8 - 11 am. That means I get up at 7am and so I'm constantly tired, but I do get Friday to Sunday off which is good, I don't think I could handle 7 days a week. Im really fortunate though, to have an amazing coach, she has been great to work and ride with. I have been leasing a couple different horses in the past 2 months, its really interesting to ride different horses once…

While it may be cliché, somehow I can't imagine any more appropriate post on New Year's Day. As I sit here, watching the Tournament of Roses Parade (and pausing the DVR frequently to admire the equestrian units), I can't help but look back at 2009 and everything I've gone through with Samba, and build upon my plans for us in 2010.
Samba became mine in February, a few months shy of her fourth birthday. Although all horses "turn" a year older on January 1st, I just can't bring myself…

Christmas days are not easy for me, being away from my family takes its toll at this time of year. However, I can safely say the 2009 was good for me and I spent a lovely few days with Rick and his family in Cheshire who made me feel very welcomed. Lots of delicious food and probably a stone more later I am back in London and it's days away from New Year...

The other day on a blog,
http://theridinginstructor.net, I wrote a post about boarding contracts. It was triggered by a recent situation where my daughter took over care at a small boarding stable here, when the owners went out of town. A horse went head to tail down (seizure) and remained that way for at least 8 1/2 to 9 hours. The horse owners refused to get a vet for the horse. The stable owner had no board contract, and the vets will not touch a…

My mom turned 70 the end of November. She's still an avid horsewoman and an active rider and driver. I've had Pixie at the indoor arena since Thanksgiving weekend and she is now nicely going. 6-weeks green but solid thanks to Heather's training (I'm getting too old to bounce! plus I needed a break from riding after the intense summer).
I asked my mommy if she wanted to ride her pony before I sell it or ship it to the H/J sales barn as soon as a pony stall frees up. So she came down…

Well, I don't mind admiting when a horse has the better of me, and this one certainly did!! It was a hard day of riding this tricky horse , and he got the best me on more than one occasion. As you can see in the photo , he's a mighty beast and will take every ounce of my being to make something of him. Wish me luck!!

Pic. above: Kingsley being given a sleepy stretch...
There is no doubt we are here for a long haul and we are miles away from soundness but there are some positive signs of improvement so here is where we are at right now...
We had Kingsley seen to today by Richard the vet (who did initial injections on the 16th of November) and physiotherapist Anna Johnson. The plan was to have Kingsley re-assessed to see if there is any improvement…

When I was in High School, about a thousand years ago, I was an AVID trail rider. Nothing in my life has ever felt so wonderful as when I was riding through the woods with my Buckskin Quarter Horse, Wendy. Needless to say, after graduation, life started to happen and I stopped riding.
I'm at a point in my life now where I can begin the process of owning horses again. Luckily, my boyfriend grew up around horses his entire life. His father was a trail boss for decades, and they had a…

Well Loosi's (Bask N Coins) 2009 fantastic season just keeps getting better and better.
While we didn't expect to get any awards other than mileage accomplishments (Mother, Loosi and I all got our 1500 miles) at the OCTRA banquet due to the fact that we spent the majority of the season stateside. We completed only 3 Endurance rides and 1 CTR within OCTRA, well Loosi was 15th Endurance Horse and 19th Overall (combined CTR and END) - wow, guess everyone else had short seasons as well…

Welcome to this week’s edition of Equine Science News. Today I’ll be talking about DNA, horse vices and alternative medicines.
Scientists have made a new discovery about the evolution of our equine partners after looking at ancient DNA.
The team of researchers from the University of Adelaide, in Australia looked at DNA from the bones of extinct horses, found in caves. They identified new horse species in the landmass of Europe & Asia and also in South…

This fall, Robert Dover was named Coach and Technical Advisor for the Canadian Dressage Team, so when I sat down to interview him I expected a cut and dry discussion about strategy, goals and timetables. What I got was so much more.
Robert is, quite simply, an extraordinary person to talk to. His focus, creativity and positive energy are contagious. It is no wonder his appointment has the Canadian equestrian scene buzzing.
What is your specific role with the… Continue

I recently rescued a foal from slaughter with my mom, who also works with horses. We've had him for about five months now, and he's around 10 months old. He's really calm for a baby, very friendly and learns quickly. His hooves, we learned, are also really hard for a baby, which our farrier says is better. I'm curious- does anyone think they have an Idea of what breed he is? Of course he's a pinto, XD but my mom thinks he had some quarter horse…

It's the winter that's always the hardest in this job. It's not even the cold and the rain and short dark days, it's the tiredness that comes with it. I feel shattered and organising everything so it runs more or less smoothly seems like a grand effort. It's even worse when one or two things crop up unexpected which means whatever managed to be painstakingly planned ends up upside down and inside out.
I spent last evening in Hampshire…
