It is a sickness, I have come to that conclusion. Admitting that is the first step to recovery, right?
I was organizing the barn today and realized I have 3 lead shanks for every horse in the barn. I have cotton ones with bull snaps, cotton ones with chains and leather leads. There are even a few nylon leads, then there are the show leads.
So then I started looking at halters. Every horse in the barn has a nice new nylon halter with a lead hanging on their door. As soon as a halter gets a little ratty looking or the buckles rust, I replace it. But HEY, they are the good Brubacher halters that are the same nylon and buckles as Hamilton halters at half the price. Who can resist a bargain, right?
I have spare halters in various sizes for those growing horses and I have 4 foal halters, I only ever have 2 foals at a time. Then there are the leather show halters. I never leave Brubachers without another halter or lead. I am ill, yes I am sick.
But it could be shoes right?

Dawn, I go to a massage therapist once a month to get all the kinks worked out. I find I very helpful.

Be Ridin’ till I die

My bones may creek, my back may hurt, chores take me a heck of a lot longer,
For sure, my butt may not look as good as it did when I first leaned to ride
But Gratitude makes my heart still sings and my soul still flies as I saddle-up
most favorite stead
and head down the road for another adventure and a great little ride.

I know I am a heck of a lot slower, throwing my leg over that heavy old roper,
My rides not as long, I have been long grounded from any kind of jumps,
Mostly me and my old Blue down some quite back roads for a solitude ride.
but no matter how gray the two of us get, I can still brag that a great horse I still ride.

Soon I will meet my maker, He has been ridin’ with me since before I could walk.
Just make sure when I go, you toss my bridle right in with me
Bring a braid of my horse hair, make sure you give him a treat while your there
You better show up in your old cowboy hat, dirt on your boots and ready to dance
Kicking up your heels n’ know I saddled-up until the moment to heaven I went

For I will be ridin’ until the day that I die.

Welcome Elaine and Dawn!
Dawn, I had to laugh when you said you were "coming" 55. I mean only horsey people can appreciate that!!
To help with your range of motion, ask Claire Biafore who is an osteopath in our Barnmice community. She'll give you some really helpful ideas that are specific to you stiffnesses. :)

Hi, I just joined, too. I'm 54 (coming 55!), and I ride my big Oldenburg mare 5 times a week. I used to jump when I was younger, but fell just one too many times!
So now I ride dressage and LOVE it. Since I've found my passion discipline so late in life, I have to overcome aches, pains, and stiffness! One can always deal with a bit of pain, but I find the lack of range of motion a problem.
Any suggestions that work?
It's nice to connect with my ilk!

Hi! New to the group today....I am 50+++ and still agile, horse crazy and competent. So my life is busy. I am retired almost 10 years now - took early retirement from work and love my life. I have ridden my entire life, but took 15 years off when the kids came. They are athletic like my husband and I, so spent all those years taking them to practices and games. At the same time I was playing on a tournament ball team, so all the horses were sold. Then one day my husband told me I needed to have another horse. Well, that's all I needed to hear so about 2 months later, I was back into the horse business, and loving it! I work out with Pilates on a regular basis, and for a while I had a dressage instructor who was a Prix St Georges rider and a certified Stott Pilates teacher, so I had great training. I love Pilates for the mind and the core strength and agility it provides. My horse likes the effects of it too !!! In the beginning I did a lot of jumping, and rode another person's quarter horse in barrels and the pick up race. I loved it !!! Then I myself got into quarter horses and have been hooked ever since. Mind you, in the beginning the quarter horse did it all, without all the special breeding for specific disciplilnes that goes on today. But I am competing with my quarter horse mare, who is not an appendix quarter horse, but who is 16 hh, and we are working on 2nd Level stuff and showing First Level. I also own a Welsh/Standardbred mare, who looks like a Friesdian and I love her too. She is only just turned 6, so is just beginning her dressage career, but I love working with her. My husband doesn't ride but is knowledgeable about horses, and is often my eyes on the ground. He also helps with chores, a novelty I guess. I rode on the quarter horse circuit for about 5 years and he and I would go away for 3 and 4 day weekends to the quarter horse shows - we had such fun. I presently board 2 Arabians for a woman who is also 50+, and we have a great time. She is getting back into riding after 5 years away and wants to try dressage so I am looking forward to some teaching. We have a barn cat; a house cat; a Pug, and a stray cat that has chosen us to look after him. We have 2 children and 4 grandchildren. We live in Ontario on a 100+ acre farm, and are certainly enjoying that life. I've enjoyed reading the comments of the members.

I have taken lessons with three different people that were helpful to me at different times. I know others that give lessons to all kinds of riders and are adaptable to what the rider needs and wants besides competitive showing. Right now I am taking lessons with a Parelli instructor and she's got us doing different patterns under saddle which helps with safe and centered riding. My horse and I do alot of play time on the ground also. Some people call it circus tricks and maybe it sort of is but the BIG thing is that it leads to great communication between human and horse. At this point my horse will come to the gate of the pasture when he hears me arrive which is a real treat to me. He will do a lunging circle around me with no line attached between he and I. While circling he will do transitions and change direction with no line attached and stop when cued. He'll back and come on cue also. He has more whoa then go so that is often a challenge but he's getting better at going off easier.
I broke my ankle tripping over the dog in the living room when I wasn't watching where I was going. I had surgery on it & the doctor put a plate and six screws in my ankle. Cash was sooooo good during all of this and seemed to just know there couldn't be any monkey business. Very soon after I healed and got the cast off he started doing little naughty things that scare me like kicking out when I'd ask him to keep going. He'd stop and back up to the arena wall and kick. It was just as if he knew I needed a challenge to move forward and stop being so nervous. We're a work in progress and I love it.
Are you familiar with the Parelli methods of training at all? There's many paths to a fun horse experience but whenever I stick to the progressive program we have a good time and do move forward. I never before dreamed we'd being doing all the things we can do together. I am thrilled!
If you are looking for a trainer, you could try going to 4H shows or pony club events where you are likely to meet people that can lead to finding someone good at helping you.
