All good advice on buying a horse - a lady in Tucson with a horse rescue was getting 8 to 10 calls a day last spring of people trying to give her their backyard, pleasure, show horses (!), all fine, ridable horses they didn't think they could afford anymore... so my feeling is that the typical horse at a rescue facility has changed from the very starved, abused or lame equine. It might be worth consideration - and they always take them back if it's a bad match for the person or the horse. Just a thought.

If I can just add a few more points. Any horse you are considering buying I suggest you work out an agreement that you could take the horse on a trial basis. In our barn, the owner always takes a horse that she is considering buying on a trial basis. If it does not work out, he goes back. If he does, great. I sometimes don't trust the marketing ploys that people use to sell a horse. "Great for beginner, no vices". Don't buy unless they are able to let you have the horse, I would say for at least a month. If they are honest people they will let you. I think you would need at least a couple of weeks to see if you are compatible.

To Kim Schmittendorf,
You do not have to spend over $10,000 for a horse. I agree with the writer below. Equestrian Connection is another dite that has many good horses for sale. The market to good now. You may want to go with an older experienced horse, from someone who is moving up, although many young horses are quiet. Quarter horses in general are steady.

Be very careful of free horses. Some are a real gift, but many are free because of issues.

Hope this helps.

Re: note to all from Kim Schmittendorf. Whoever told you you'd have to pay over $10,000 for a horse must live in a parallel universe. You CAN pay that for a horse, but why? You said you do hunter classes and you want a horse with show experience - presumably not Spruce Meadows experience ;-D - and there are lots of those around at way under $10,000.
Now is an excellent time to buy a horse. There are so many good horses available for the usual reason - girl going off to univerity/college and parents not willing to take over the horse, and for the other reason - the recession has hit so many people and the horse is the first to go. I am certain you can buy a nice hunter horse for under $5000, and if you look hard, I'll bet you'll find one for $2500. Check local tack shops and feed shops, ask farriers, vets - they are the people who will know who's got what for sale. Also check the free horse sale magazines and the internet - Horsetopia for one. There were several horses for sale in my area this summer for $2500 that would regularly have gone for $8,000 - the recession causing people to cut back. Good luck - the right horse is out there waiting for you.

Gorgeous day for a ride taking Arabesque then lesson tonight.Vet was out for vacc and teeth this week,We had to sedate Arabesque for his teeth,so we flushed his blocked tear duct at the same time.We did Jack's teeth without sedation and he's eating much better.I had Arabesque behind me so I could keep an eye on him coming out of sedation, holding Jack while vet rinses grass from his mouth so she could do his teeth,he lifts his head green water/drool all down my arm Arabesque starts leaning on me.The glamour of horses!

I judge a H/J show this weekend on the side of a beautiful mountain in the high desert - I really hope we have good weather! I'm fighting congestion, cough and fatigue (herbalist, heal thyself!) and hope to enjoy it - lots of yarrow, elderberry, colloidal silver and grapefruit juice...

I had to school for a show tomorrow in the pouring rain! It's rained in Cincinnati every day for 5 days!. Better weather forecasted for next week but on a brighter note.... went to the annual Tack Trunk store sale and scored my favorite show breeches for 1/2 off and 2 pairs of Kerritts schooling breeches and a vest for 1/2 off! Good thing my husband left to go out of town earlier today.

This was THE most gorgeous day for a ride ... and I even popped my dressage horse over a few small jumps! We were both ecstatically happy!!! :-) This is my favourite time of year for sure.
