OADG Steffen Peters Clinic

I would just like to thank the Ottawa Area Dressage Group for the opportunity to ride in the clinic with Steffen. It was a well organized event and I appreciated all his help and input with Discansano. Steffen is a great clinician and would enjoy working with him again in the future.

I would also like to thank ECOGOLD for sponsoring the event and the donation of the saddle pads.

Thanks again to everyone involved that made this such a great event.

Stetching out the hip flexors

I've been using some of the ideas that I see in you blog and have to report that I am starting to see a difference.

Yesterday, I worked on opening up the hip flexors for about 45 minutes (a variety of exercises) and then rode. It was unquestionably the most supple ride that I have had recently.

This is especially critical for me as I am now riding a new young stallion (age 3) who has a lot of movement and lots of push from behind. My biggest problem is being able to keep… Continue

Getting Ready

So today I mostly worked on my freestyle. We have a Dressage show this weekend at Beban Park and we are doing training lv tests 2 and 4 open, and a training level freestyle. I am very excited about the freestyle, but it has been hard to make it up without any software. I've been watching video of my horse and I and figuring out how long it takes her for each movement (ex. exactly 18 sec per trot circle -- she is super consistant) and then matching music. I'm doing a mix of a bunch of Ray… Continue

The Pony, a bright future in driving?

These last couple of weeks I've been long reining (?) the pony a lot. I really want to make a driving horse (pony) out of her, but since I don't have a harness (or wagon) yet long reining will do for now.

I've taken her:

*over big plastic sheets

*poles on the ground,

*over barrels,

*in traffic,

*climbing steep hills,

*with ropes hanging behind her on the ground,

*with a friend pulling the ropes and… Continue

OADG Steffen Peters' Clinic

We were as thrilled to be at the Steffen Peters' clinic at the RCMP Arena in Ottawa this weekend, as were all the auditors & riders. It was a great opportunity for them to get one-on-one instruction from the current World Champion. We were surprised to see him get on almost all the horses. As he explained, it was easier for him to understand the horse from the saddle than from the ground. It was a real treat to see him in action and reveal his… Continue

My dream - step one

My goal is for me and my horse to have the best relationship I can have with a horse, and her with a human. My dream is riding bridle less in her field in tall grass or galloping through the snow with nothing but her mane to hold on to.

I've had my horse for over 10 years and today i took the first real step in realizing my dream.

I trust her, but to avoid misunderstandings i did it as easy as I could for her. not giving her the opportunity to fail when I took the step and… Continue

Practice, Practice, Practice!

It's my favourite time of the week again! Riding!

My week has been filled with pacing my activities and recovering from my lesson last week. My FMS pain and fatigue levels has been up and down, and the other symptoms nagging at me, but this week has been an ok week, illness wise.

But, I have been going through everything my instructor told me last week. Trying to memorize everything I had to do to get Pink down on the bit and moving forward as well as my position.

I am pretty…

Dreamers and the Art of Riding

This quote is wonderful for both riders and artists:

"To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan, but also believe." - Anatole France

Many great athletes practice mentally picturing themselves performing to perfection. Could this be a form of dreaming -- incorporating planning -- that leads to confidence and believing? Have you tried it with your riding? During my riding lesson yesterday my…

Staying Up All Night Reading A Good Book

Last night I stayed up until 2:00 a.m. I went to bed at 11:00. I wasn't doing anything I can't write about here, either.

I was reading my newest Kindle 2 download, The Horse Boy by Rupert Isaacson.

Like a schoolgirl who's laid hands on her first bodice-ripper and reads it with fascinated, secret relish, I could not put this book down. It's that compelling. Even if you care not an iota about horses, you'll enjoy this book.

This is no passionate daddy…

Done Second Year

Home for the summer. Two years of school done, two years to go. It was a challenge riding this school year, but I managed to ride at least 6 days a week, often more than once a day! I volunteered with the local Riding for the Disabled association as an exersize rider. I got to ride some pretty cool ponies and even a clyde/mustang! I also took lessons on some pretty wild TBs, and ended up riding one two or three times a week on top of the ponies to keep it in shape while his owner is away in…

When Hacking Presents Peril, Foxhunting Accoutrements Come to the Rescue

Tamara of The Barb Wire recently wrote about an unfortunate encounter with an unrestrained dog while out on her mare Consolation.

All of us have had such unpleasant meetings at one time or another. Regardless of your feelings about foxhunting, there are some bits of equipment that might help make equestrian outings safer and more pleasant.

In particular, I'm thinking of the hunt whip.

The hunt whip consists…

Autism, Horses and a Hail Mary Trip to Mongolia

Rowan Isaacson is a seven-year-old boy with autism. Until the age of five he had suffered every symptom the illness threw every possible symptom and limitation his way. Rowan's father and mother, Rupert and Kristin, were heartbroken that their son's life was filled with wild tantrums and little meaningful connection. "You're saying goodbye to a bunch of dreams that I think every parent has of a certain type of childhood, and a certain type of relationship with your…

RDA Riding Lesson.

It's Wednesday, and the day I look forward to most in the week. It's the day of my riding lesson.

I love this day, being able to go and ride and get out of the house. I love being able to get on a horse....even if it's just for a few mins, it gives me a buzz. I have always been like this ever since I was little.

Any way before I get side tracked, I had better get on an tell you about my lesson.

I rode Pink, who is genuine, a super little dressage horse and a great horse…

My Visit to Kine in Norway.

I'm a little behind on my blog, but I hope I can catch up on it now!

Over the Easter holiday I flew to Norway to visit and stay with Kine, my friend of a couple of years and a Barnmice Blogger.

I had heard and seen so many photos of Pernille that I really wanted to meet her and Kine. So after loads of invites, an opportunity finally arrived for me to go and visit Kine for the first time. Kine and I speak online virtually every day, so to actually talk in person was really…

Eventing thoughts

have put together a few thoughts and added a lot of other peoples thoughts to write down some points of interest on modern eventing safety, thought it might be interesting to and thought provoking.

I was lucky enough to have had a very enjoyable and reasonably successful eventing career when I was a young man. Over the recent years I have also had time to reflect on how things have changed and have given a great deal of thought and deliberation on the human fatalities in our sport…

New here !!! -- introduction.

I am new here on Barnmice, and thought I'd introduce myself with a blog post.

My love of horses started when I was very young (probably from the day I was born really) as it tends to run in my family. I never had the chance to have my own horse until I was ten, when my mom bought me my first pony, Teaspoon. Teaspoon was a standardbred/hackney , (what a cross huh?) and was only ever used for driving, but she was sweet enough to let me hop on bareback and ride her all over the…
