Whether you are training a show horse or back yard pet,
when you
start training is as important as what you are training your horse to
do. Many people wait until a horse is four or five years old to start
training, suggesting that a horse is too physically immature to bear the weight
of a human on their back before then. That argument has validity because
horses do not physically mature until they are approximately seven
years old. However the longer…

In response to Kim Schmittendorf's blog about Horse Husbands, my first response was, "Yes, I supported my wife after she spent nearly 40 years not riding, between the time she started university and the time I was able financially to support a horse plus lessons." However, some of us "Horse Husbands" have found ourselves, after not riding at all in the past 50++ years, falling head over heals in love with our 4 legged friends. My lovely mate could say she wants to drop the ponys altogether…

Just a couple of short little love notes.
The horse speaks directly into our soul, instantly bypassing, beyond the everyday suffering and pain of human endurance, and migrate directly into our beating hearts . Love roberta marie edstrom

I wasn’t born in a barn. It was the small building south of the barn- our house. As the youngest, there were times that I needed a baby sitter, but there weren’t always hands free for that job on our farm. I gave everyone a good scare as a toddler. My Mother noticed I was missing from the spot she left…

Thanks for the commiseration. In hind sight, he did not look at it when I brought it in (I should have insisted) and simply wrote down the info. I gave him and then later said it was false. Since the blanket is MIA, there is nothing I can do to repudiate his claims that it was not in good shape and not the type I said it was....I would rather have donated it to a horse charity than have this happen.

10 Diet Tips to a Healthier You, Tip 6:
Small and Frequent Meals – your body will do best if you give it frequent
little meals. If you try to starve yourself all morning by avoiding
breakfast then you are actually more likely to gain weight from the food
you eat – and research shows it is harder for people to concentrate and
focus if they skip breakfast. Start with a healthy breakfast including a
piece of fruit…

I had a very nasty experience lately with an established tack store. Took in a nearly new expensive blanket to sell on consignment and dropped in a few weeks later to be told the blanket was NOT what I said it was and was sold for $40. The owner came close to accusing me of lying. I was so stunned, I left, but not before he volunteered to get it back and call me. What a surprise; I have heard nothing. This is a place I have patronized for 20 odd years. What is the matter with people in the…

5. Interactive Play
Once you have introduced your horse to a variety of things, it is important to try and give the objects a purpose or make them part of your play.
This is were you get to be creative and think of ways you can incorporate your ground and riding cues into challenging games that can test your communication, build confidence, and ultimately build a better…

Hi Everyone~ I'm Jamie at Bit Blanket. I'm a member here on Barnmice and a life long horse lover. I invented Bit Blanket, the electric bit warmer, and as the holidays approach and cold weather begins to set in, I wanted to share our fun list of why everyone needs a Bit Blanket. Most of these came directly from our customers and I have a strong suspicion that our horses would definitely agree with many of them, especially…

I want to address a problem that people are having sending a horse away from them at liberty. Many people have expressed concern that driving a horse away from them will hurt the trust and bond. I can understand this point of view because of the struggle it might take in their mind to teach a horse to leave you when he does not want to go.…

This week Brody and I got back into a pretty steady routine of nightly play, and Brody seems happy about it. The other night I stayed up ‘til about midnight, and when I went to shut off the outside lights I could see him at the gate, peering through the back door at me! I went out a gave him a carrot. We’re having so much fun, I’m finding it hard to tear myself away from our sessions at the end of the…

Debbie worked her usual magic on the mare she is training.
She finally found a western saddle that fit the mare's shoulders (a Wintec synthetic). Then she took the mare too the beach (lucky mare) and faced her with new challenges. Debbie said it all came together when the surf crashed into the mare's hind end, the mare…

I am Mustang, The very last one
The pain is great but then silence
Now, I feel like I am back home
I hear the thundering of a thousand beating hearts
so many, and now me, all sent into the dark
None stampeding as always, as just one
Dear God, our time as come
I believe, I was the very last one.
The finale mustang to take the last breath
I ask, God, what have they done
Man will not know…
