with Great Gratitude for the launch of Spring Reins of Hope - Getting to the Horse of the Matter

On Wednesday, November 11, 2009 we officially launched SPRING REINS OF HOPE / Getting to the Horse of the Matter.

It is all starting to sink in and so I wanted to take a moment to let everyone know that it really does take a village. WE is so much better than ME!

Saddle fitting at the pommel

This blog is in response to Valerie’s question from a few weeks ago:

If the question is relating to the pommel area specifically, I have pretty much already addressed this in a previous blog about withers clearance. There are exceptions to this rule for mutton-withered horses and extremely high withered horses (many saddles have lots of clearance on top of the withers, but not on the side of the withers). On a high withered horse you are lucky if achieve 1-2 fingers clearance all…

Vet & Physio post injections re-assessment plus trot videos

Pic. above: Kingsley being given a sleepy stretch...

There is no doubt we are here for a long haul and we are miles away from soundness but there are some positive signs of improvement so here is where we are at right now...

We had Kingsley seen to today by Richard the vet (who did initial injections on the 16th of November) and physiotherapist Anna Johnson. The plan was to have Kingsley re-assessed to see if there is any improvement… Continue

How to:

Knock down a fence

Kill your instructor

Get out of jumping a fence

All this in today’s episode of ”TSSP learning to jump”

Saturday the pony had her first jumping lesson. We’ve jumped lots of times before but this was the

This Week in Horse History - December 14th Through December 20th

December 14, 2002 – Today, the second Saturday in December, marked the First Annual Day of the Horse in the state of California. The day serves as a celebration of the horse as being a living link to our history, and the Legislature called "upon all citizens to be mindful of the welfare of the horse and its contribution to our economy, heritage, and history." Various stables held celebrations…

A Christmas Horse Story

I don't know who the author is, but the story is lovely.

The young couple had made their usual hurried, pre-Christmas visit to the little farm where dwelt their elderly parents with their small herd of horses. The farm had been named Lone Pine Farm because of the huge pine which topped the hill behind the farm, and through the years had become a talisman to the old man and his wife, and a landmark in the countryside.

The old folks no longer showed their… Continue

Starting over again

When I was in High School, about a thousand years ago, I was an AVID trail rider. Nothing in my life has ever felt so wonderful as when I was riding through the woods with my Buckskin Quarter Horse, Wendy. Needless to say, after graduation, life started to happen and I stopped riding.

I'm at a point in my life now where I can begin the process of owning horses again. Luckily, my boyfriend grew up around horses his entire life. His father was a trail boss for decades, and they had a… Continue

Riding Gives Me Back My Body

With MS, even if I am not having an "attack", my body can rapidly worsen. In the past three weeks I had a gradual decline in physical ability, one that I did not notice at first. Last week was the worst, three times when I walked without my canes I'd loose my balance unexpectedly, start staggering, and almost fall. I did not fall because riding has helped me recognize when I lose my balance, and because my thigh muscles are strong enough to keep me on my feet long enough so I…

Icing on the Cake!

Well Loosi's (Bask N Coins) 2009 fantastic season just keeps getting better and better.

While we didn't expect to get any awards other than mileage accomplishments (Mother, Loosi and I all got our 1500 miles) at the OCTRA banquet due to the fact that we spent the majority of the season stateside. We completed only 3 Endurance rides and 1 CTR within OCTRA, well Loosi was 15th Endurance Horse and 19th Overall (combined CTR and END) - wow, guess everyone else had short seasons as well… Continue

Equine Science: Weekly News and Trivia Question - December 11, 2009

Welcome to this week’s edition of Equine Science News. Today I’ll be talking about DNA, horse vices and alternative medicines.

Scientists have made a new discovery about the evolution of our equine partners after looking at ancient DNA.

The team of researchers from the University of Adelaide, in Australia looked at DNA from the bones of extinct horses, found in caves. They identified new horse species in the landmass of Europe & Asia and also in South… Continue

9 Tips to Help You Sit the Trot

One of the most frequently asked questions I get is, "Can you help me sit the trot better?"

So here are some quick tips to help you with this all too common challenge.

1. First and foremost, your horse needs to be on the bit. If his back is hollow, stiff, or tight, you’ll find it impossible to sit comfortably. (And, in turn, you'll make your horse uncomfortable too!)

To put him on the bit, review my blog post…

How to Become a Professional Horse Trainer

Dear Julie:

I have a 13 year old daughter who has been in 4H Pony Club since she was eight years old. She has become a great rider and is interested in learning how to become a professional rider of reining, cutting...or any western type horses in shows. What kind of advice would you give her as far as working towards that goal? She dreams of making it into the NRHA Reiner publications someday. She is also interested in becoming a clinician and has already begun training young horses…

BEST OF WILLIAM MICKLEM – 3 – Racing towards a ‘fifth leg’ (Part One)

A fifth-leg supremo, William Fox-Pitt.

If you want to jump safely, the fundamental aim in training should be to develop your horse’s ability to look after himself. If your horse looks at what he is jumping, makes automatic alterations, and has quick reactions when getting too close or far away from a fence, or when slipping or tripping, he can be said to have a ‘fifth leg’. All horses should have a fifth-leg training programme as part of…

Questions and answers about riding to music and freestyles!

Here is a question I get all the time about the riding your freestyle at home vs. riding your freestyle at a show. I thought you might all enjoy it! Ruth

Question:

I have ridden my freestyle a number of times in competition. I have ridden it time and time again perfectly at home and know my music very well.

This is my question. I ride my test perfectly at home but when I get to a venue... I am ALWAYS ahead of the music!!! It's not a big problem because I know… Continue

Horse Nutrition: What can change my horse's attitude?

There are some truths, but numerous misconceptions regarding nutrition and your horse's attitude. The confusion comes from the challenge of measuring what "attitude" really means. There is limited proper scientific research regarding the link between nutrition and attitude. Furthermore, many practices used in the industry to change a horse’s attitude often cause secondary side effects that can be detrimental to your horse's welfare, one of the worst is to withhold…

Bomb Proof Your Horse Before The Show

Tackle the Monsters before they Tackle You

With over 35 years show experience I’ve come to know exactly what is going to upset a horse new to competition.

If the horse eating monsters are handled on the front end, you will have a huge advantage while competing, and definitely have a much, much better over all show experience and confidence builder for both you and your partner.

Just because your horse appears to have a… Continue

Robert Dover Talks About His New Role With The Canadian Dressage Team

This fall, Robert Dover was named Coach and Technical Advisor for the Canadian Dressage Team, so when I sat down to interview him I expected a cut and dry discussion about strategy, goals and timetables. What I got was so much more.

Robert is, quite simply, an extraordinary person to talk to. His focus, creativity and positive energy are contagious. It is no wonder his appointment has the Canadian equestrian scene buzzing.

What is your specific role with the…
